TRIP ITINERARY

DAY 01:

CUSCO - CLOUD FOREST - PAUCARTAMBO – PILCOPATA LODGE

We will pick you up directly from your hotel in Cusco between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. in our comfortable private transport, ready to begin an unforgettable journey into the Amazon basin.

Our first stop will be the Chullpas de Ninamarca (3,750 m.a.s.l.), ancient funerary towers built by pre-Incan cultures, offering a fascinating glimpse into Peru’s ancestral past. We then continue to the charming colonial town of Paucartambo, known for its vibrant folklore and well-preserved colonial bridge. From there, we ascend to the Acjanaco Pass (4,000 m.a.s.l.), the official entrance to the Manu National Park, one of the most biodiverse protected areas on the planet. As we begin our descent, we enter the mystical cloud forest, a lush and humid ecosystem teeming with life. Along the way, we will stop to walk along scenic trails surrounded by orchids, heliconias, ferns, and towering trees. This area offers the perfect opportunity to witness the spectacular Cock of the Rock (Rupicola peruviana), Peru’s national bird, as it performs its unique mating ritual. With luck, we may also spot other exotic birds like trogons, quetzals, and even the elusive Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus). By late afternoon, we will arrive in the small village of Pilcopata (550 m.a.s.l.), where we’ll settle into our jungle lodge, located just outside the town. The lodge features private rooms, bathrooms, and showers, offering a comfortable and peaceful place to relax after a day of exploration.

After enjoying a delicious breakfast at the lodge, we continue our journey with a 45-minute bus ride to the port of Atalaya (490 m.a.s.l.), where we board a motorized boat for a scenic 30-minute ride along the Alto Madre de Dios River. Along the way, keep your eyes open for wildlife sightings, including colorful birds, monkeys, and other forest dwellers. We arrive at Paititi Lodge, a cozy and typical jungle accommodation nestled in the forest, equipped with private rooms, bathrooms, and showers. This will be our base for the night. After a freshly prepared lunch, we head out in the afternoon to explore the magical Machuwasi Lake (Cocha Machuwasi). Here, we’ll board a traditional catamaran raft to silently glide across the calm waters and observe the incredible biodiversity. You may spot the prehistoric-looking Hoatzin (Shansho), monkeys, reptiles, dwarf caimans, insects, and, with some luck, capybaras (Ronsocos) the largest rodents in the world. In the evening, there is an optional night walk, perfect for those who wish to discover the secrets of the nocturnal jungle and observe species that only emerge after dark. We will spend the night at Paititi Lodge, enjoying the peaceful sounds of the Amazon under the stars, with all the comforts of private bathrooms and showers.

We start very early in the morning with a 45-minute boat ride along the river to reach the Parrot Clay Lick — a natural clay wall rich in salts and minerals. Here, you’ll witness an incredible natural spectacle as hundreds of green parrots, representing 3 to 4 different species, gather to feed on the mineral-rich clay that helps them neutralize toxins and aid digestion. After this vibrant wildlife experience, we return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast before beginning our journey back to Cusco. We first navigate by boat back to Atalaya, then continue by private bus, retracing our route through Pilcopata (550 m.a.s.l.), Patria, and Chontachaca, once again passing through the enchanting cloud forest, with its lush vegetation and possible final glimpses of wildlife. We expect to arrive in the city of Cusco between 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., bringing this unforgettable Amazon rainforest adventure to a close.
