Choquequirao Trek 4 Days

Unforgettable adventure through ancient Andean trails & breathtaking mountain landscapes

5.0 Based on 342 Reviews
4 Days

Tour Overview

The Choquequirao Trek 4 Days is one of the most rewarding and off-the-beaten-path experiences in Peru, leading you deep into the Andes to the impressive archaeological site of Choquequirao, often referred to as the “last refuge of the Incas.”

This remote Inca city is rich in history and mystery, featuring ceremonial plazas, storage houses, temples, and extensive agricultural terraces, believed to have sheltered Inca populations during the Spanish conquest. Many travelers and experts consider Choquequirao to be larger and even more impressive than Machu Picchu, with only around 40% of the site currently uncovered, while the rest remains hidden beneath dense vegetation.

The trek is accessible only on foot, making it a true adventure for those seeking a more authentic and less crowded alternative to classic routes. The journey typically includes:

  • 2 days of hiking to reach the site
  • 1 full day exploring the ruins
  • 1 day returning along the same trail

This is considered one of the most challenging treks in the Cusco region, with steep ascents and descents through dramatic canyon landscapes. Proper physical preparation is strongly recommended to fully enjoy the experience.

If you are looking for a unique trekking adventure, بعيد from crowds, and deeply connected to Inca history, the Choquequirao Trek is one of the best options in Peru.

Trip itinerary

Your adventure begins early with hotel pick-up in Cusco at 5:00 AM. From there, you’ll travel by private transport for approximately 3 hours to Curahuasi, where you’ll stop for breakfast and prepare for the day ahead.

The journey continues for another hour to the scenic viewpoint of Capuliyoc Viewpoint, the starting point of your trek. From here, you’ll begin a gradual descent into the impressive Apurimac Canyon, surrounded by dramatic landscapes.

After approximately 3 hours of hiking, you’ll reach Chiquisca, where your trekking team will be waiting with a freshly prepared lunch. Following a well-deserved break, the route continues downhill toward Playa Rosalina, a peaceful spot near the river where you’ll rest and recharge.

The final section of the day is a challenging uphill hike of about 2 hours to Santa Rosa campsite. Upon arrival, the team will set up camp while you relax and enjoy a warm, freshly prepared dinner. You’ll spend the night surrounded by the quiet beauty of the Andes, preparing for the next stage of this unforgettable trek.

The day begins early around 6:00 AM with a warm coca tea served at your campsite. After a nutritious breakfast, you’ll start a 2-hour uphill hike toward Marampata, a scenic viewpoint with incredible panoramas of the Andes and the Apurimac Canyon.

At Marampata, the trekking team will remain to prepare lunch, which will be delivered for the group while you continue your journey toward Choquequirao.

You will arrive at Choquequirao around 9:30 AM and begin a guided exploration of this impressive Inca complex. Your guide will explain the history, architecture, and significance of the site, including its terraces, ceremonial areas, and hidden sectors. After the guided visit, you’ll have free time to explore at your own pace and fully appreciate this remote and uncrowded archaeological wonder.

In the afternoon, you’ll hike back to Marampata, where a freshly prepared dinner will be waiting. You’ll spend the night at the campsite, surrounded by stunning mountain views and the peaceful atmosphere of the Andes.

After breakfast around 8:00 AM, you’ll begin your return journey toward Cusco, starting with a 3-hour descent into the impressive Apurimac Canyon.

Once you reach the river, you’ll have time to relax and enjoy a freshly prepared lunch by our trekking chefs in a peaceful natural setting. This is a perfect moment to recharge before the next section of the trek.

In the afternoon, you’ll begin a 2-hour uphill hike to Chiquisca, where your third campsite is located. Upon arrival, the team will set up camp while you unwind and take in the surrounding scenery.

During your stay, you’ll have the opportunity to interact with local families and experience regional traditions, including tasting a typical beverage made from sugarcane.

The day concludes with a warm dinner and a restful night at camp, surrounded by the quiet beauty of the Andes.

The final day of your trek begins early, around 5:00 AM, after breakfast. You’ll start the last and most demanding section with a 4-hour uphill hike back to the Capuliyoc Viewpoint, timing the ascent to avoid the intense midday sun.

Upon arrival, you’ll have time to relax and take in the spectacular views of the Apurimac Canyon and the surrounding Andean mountains. A well-deserved lunch will be served while you enjoy the scenery and reflect on the journey.

After lunch, private transportation will take you back to Cusco, with an estimated arrival time of around 4:30 PM. You will be dropped off directly at your hotel, marking the end of an unforgettable trekking adventure through one of Peru’s most remote and impressive regions.

We were a group of four girls, all 24 years old! It was an incredible experience! Genrri was an excellent guide, and our chef, Ricardo, was fantastic; he prepared vegetarian lunch and dinner for us every day. I highly recommend it!

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.
