Trip itinerary

2:45–3:30 AM — Hotel Pick-Up and Departure from Arequipa
Your Colca Canyon Tour from Arequipa begins with early hotel pickup, followed by an approximately 3-hour drive toward Chivay, the Colca Valley’s main town, passing through striking high-Andean landscapes near the snow-capped Chachani Volcano.

Morning — Breakfast in Chivay
Upon arrival in Chivay, the group stops for breakfast before continuing deeper into the valley toward one of the region’s most iconic viewpoints.

Scenic Drive Through the Colca Valley
The journey continues for approximately an hour, with stops at selected natural viewpoints along the way — excellent opportunities to admire the valley, traditional agricultural terraces, surrounding mountains, and the dramatic geography of the canyon.

Cruz del Cóndor — Andean Condor Viewpoint
The main morning highlight is the famous Cruz del Cóndor, one of the most visited viewpoints in Colca Canyon. Here, you’ll have approximately an hour to take in the canyon’s immense scale and, weather permitting, watch majestic Andean condors gliding above the valley — one of the tour’s true highlights and a fantastic spot for photography and panoramic views.

Traditional Villages of Maca and Yanque
On the return drive through the valley, the tour visits traditional villages like Maca and Yanque, known for their colonial churches, local traditions, colorful clothing, and surrounding agricultural landscapes. Throughout the valley, you’ll also spot hundreds of pre-Inca agricultural terraces, many still used today to cultivate traditional Andean crops such as corn, quinoa, and kiwicha.

Optional Hot Springs
Before lunch, travelers have the option to visit local thermal baths, where naturally heated waters reach approximately 35°C (95°F) — a relaxing addition to your day in the Colca Valley.

Lunch in the Colca Valley
Following the morning’s activities, the group stops for lunch before beginning the return journey toward Arequipa.

Patapampa — Volcano Viewpoint
On the way back, a stop at Patapampa — one of the trip’s highest points at approximately 4,800 meters (15,748 feet) — offers impressive views of several volcanoes and snow-capped peaks dominating the high-Andean landscape.

Pampa Cañahuas National Reserve
The route also passes through the Pampa Cañahuas National Reserve, where native Andean wildlife such as vicuñas, alpacas, and llamas may be spotted. Depending on conditions and season, travelers might also see various Andean bird species, including flamingos, ibis, Andean geese, ducks, and caracaras.

Approximately 5:30 PM — Return to Arequipa
After a full day exploring Colca Canyon and its surrounding valley, the group heads back to Arequipa, with arrival expected around 5:30 PM. Our transportation team coordinates your exact pickup time in advance, so you know when to be ready before departure. Once all travelers are gathered, the journey toward Chivay and Colca Canyon begins — letting you start the tour directly from your accommodation without arranging separate transportation. If your hotel falls outside the standard pickup zone, our team will suggest the nearest convenient meeting point or advise on alternative transfer options. Confirming your hotel name and address with Machu Picchu Team ahead of time helps us coordinate pickup correctly and avoid delays on departure day.

Round-Trip Tourist Transportation

Round-trip transportation from Arequipa to Colca Canyon and back is fully included, letting you travel comfortably through the high Andes while passing spectacular mountain scenery, traditional villages, natural viewpoints, and protected areas along the route.

Breakfast in Chivay

A breakfast stop in Chivay is included following the early-morning journey from Arequipa, giving you a chance to recharge before continuing toward Colca Canyon and the renowned Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint.

Buffet Lunch

Your tour includes a buffet lunch in the Colca Valley, featuring a selection of local and regional dishes — a welcome opportunity to rest and refuel before beginning the return journey to Arequipa.

Professional Bilingual Tour Guide

A professional guide fluent in English and Spanish accompanies you throughout the day, sharing insights into Colca Canyon, local culture, traditional villages, Andean wildlife, agricultural terraces, volcanoes, and the region’s history along the way.

First-Aid Kit

A basic first-aid kit is carried throughout the tour to assist with minor incidents or common discomforts that may arise during the journey. Since the route reaches elevations of approximately 4,800 meters (15,748 feet), travelers should bring any personal medication they might need and inform their guide of relevant medical conditions before departure.

Colca Canyon Entrance Fee — S/70

The tourist entrance fee for Colca Canyon isn’t included in your tour price. The current reference price is approximately S/70 per person, paid directly at the corresponding local control point on the day of your excursion. This fee grants access to the Colca Valley’s main tourist areas, including the viewpoints and attractions visited throughout the tour.

Hot Springs Entrance Fee — S/15

Admission to the thermal baths is entirely optional and not included in the tour price. Travelers interested in this activity should budget approximately S/15 per person, payable directly at the entrance. The hot springs offer a relaxing optional stop before lunch, perfect for unwinding in naturally warm thermal waters after the morning’s sightseeing.

Important Note

Since entrance fees are set by local authorities or service providers, prices may change without prior notice. We recommend carrying some extra cash in Peruvian soles on the day of your Colca Canyon Tour from Arequipa to cover these expenses comfortably.

What to Pack for Your Colca Canyon Tour from Arequipa

Since this Colca Canyon Tour from Arequipa starts very early in the morning and travels through varying elevations — from the city of Arequipa to high-Andean areas reaching approximately 4,800 meters (15,748 feet) — temperature swings are significant. Pre-dawn hours and high-altitude viewpoints tend to be cold, while the Colca Valley warms up considerably later in the day. Dressing in comfortable layers is strongly recommended.

What to Wear

Start with a warm base layer or t-shirt, add a fleece or sweater, and top it off with a windproof or waterproof jacket you can remove as temperatures rise. Comfortable long pants work best, paired with walking or trekking shoes offering solid grip, especially useful at viewpoint stops and uneven terrain. Since sun exposure is intense at high altitude, pack a sun hat or cap, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen. During the colder morning hours, a beanie, scarf, or light gloves can also make a noticeable difference.

What to Pack in Your Daypack

Bring a small, comfortable daypack containing the essentials for your day:

  • Passport or valid identification
  • Warm jacket or fleece
  • Windproof or waterproof jacket
  • Sun hat or cap
  • Sunglasses
  • High-SPF sunscreen
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Personal medication
  • Camera or smartphone
  • Portable charger or power bank
  • Small amount of cash in Peruvian soles for entrance fees, hot springs, drinks, souvenirs, or other personal expenses
  • Snacks for the journey
  • Rain poncho, particularly during the rainy season
  • Lip balm and moisturizer
  • Swimsuit, towel, and sandals if you plan to visit the optional hot springs

Important Recommendation: Weather throughout Colca Canyon and the high Andes can shift quickly within the same day. Dressing in layers helps you stay comfortable during the cold early-morning drive, the high-altitude stop at Patapampa, and the warmer conditions found inside the Colca Valley. Keeping your daypack light and packing only what you truly need for this full-day excursion is also recommended.

Tour Schedule

Itinerary times published on our website are approximate and may vary due to traffic, weather, road conditions, group pace, local operations, entrance procedures, or other circumstances beyond our direct control. Machu Picchu Team may make reasonable adjustments to the itinerary when necessary for operational or safety reasons, while making every effort to preserve the tour’s main attractions.

Colca Canyon Entrance Fee

The Colca Canyon tourist entrance fee isn’t included in the tour price and must be paid directly during the excursion. The reference price is approximately S/70 per person, though rates may vary by nationality, age, or regulations set by the corresponding authorities. Since entrance fees can change without prior notice, carrying sufficient cash in Peruvian soles is recommended.

Optional Hot Springs

Entrance to the hot springs is optional and not included in the tour price. Travelers choosing to participate must pay the entrance fee directly on-site, with a current reference price of approximately S/15 per person, subject to change.

Group Size

This Colca Canyon Tour from Arequipa typically operates with approximately 12 to 14 travelers, capped at a maximum of 18 participants. Group composition may vary depending on reservations made for each departure date.

High Altitude

This tour travels through high-altitude terrain, reaching approximately 4,800 meters (15,748 feet) at Patapampa. Travelers should be aware that altitude can cause symptoms such as headache, fatigue, dizziness, or shortness of breath. Anyone with relevant medical conditions or concerns about high-altitude travel should consult a healthcare professional beforehand, and travelers are responsible for carrying any personal medication they may need.

Andean Condor Sightings

The visit to Cruz del Cóndor offers an excellent opportunity to observe Andean condors, though these remain wild animals, and sightings can’t be guaranteed. Their presence and behavior depend on natural conditions such as weather, wind, season, and wildlife activity.

Weather and Road Conditions

Weather in the Andes can shift quickly. Rain, fog, strong winds, road conditions, landslides, traffic disruptions, or other factors may occasionally affect the itinerary. Should conditions require changes for safety or operational reasons, our guide and operations team will determine the most appropriate course of action.

Changes to Your Travel Date

Requests to change your tour date depend on availability and should be submitted as early as possible. Date changes can’t always be guaranteed, particularly when services with local suppliers have already been confirmed. Should a change result in additional costs, travelers will be informed before the modification is finalized.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

Cancellation requests must be submitted through an official Machu Picchu Team communication channel. Refund eligibility depends on the cancellation conditions applicable to your reservation, along with any non-recoverable expenses already paid to transportation providers, restaurants, guides, local operators, or other suppliers. Reviewing the specific cancellation policy displayed during booking before completing your reservation is recommended.

No-Show or Late Arrival

Travelers must be ready at the confirmed pickup location at the scheduled time. Given the early departure and long travel distance to Colca Canyon, the group generally cannot wait for late arrivals. Failing to appear at the agreed location and time may be treated as a no-show, potentially making the tour non-refundable.

Personal Belongings

Travelers are responsible for their passports, money, cameras, phones, luggage, and other personal items throughout the tour. Machu Picchu Team recommends carrying only the essentials needed for the day.

Acceptance of Terms

FAQs: Colca Canyon Tour from Arequipa

1. What time does this full-day tour start and finish?

Hotel pickup in Arequipa typically happens between 2:45 and 3:30 AM, with return to the city expected around 5:30 PM, though timing may shift depending on traffic, weather, road conditions, and group pace.

2. How physically demanding is the Colca Canyon Tour from Arequipa?

This tour is considered easy to moderate, since most of the day involves traveling by tourist vehicle and visiting viewpoints and villages rather than strenuous hiking. That said, the route reaches high-altitude areas of approximately 4,800 meters (15,748 feet), so some travelers may notice altitude-related effects.

3. Is the entrance fee to Colca Canyon included in the tour price?

No, this entrance fee isn’t included and must be paid directly during the tour. The reference price is approximately S/70 per person, though rates may vary based on local regulations — carrying cash in Peruvian soles is recommended.

4. Am I guaranteed to see Andean condors at Cruz del Cóndor?

Cruz del Cóndor ranks among the best spots in the canyon for observing Andean condors, but since these are wild animals, sightings can’t be guaranteed. Their appearance and activity depend on weather, wind, season, and other natural conditions beyond anyone’s control.

5. What should I pack for this tour?

We recommend bringing warm layered clothing, a windproof or waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, water, personal medication, and cash in Peruvian soles. If you’re planning to visit the optional hot springs, don’t forget a swimsuit, towel, and sandals as well.

Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know About the Colca Canyon Tour from Arequipa

Whether you’re extending your Peru trip beyond Cusco or planning a dedicated stop in Arequipa, this guide covers everything worth knowing before booking your Colca Canyon Tour from Arequipa.

Understanding the Early Departure

Yes, pickup between 2:45 and 3:30 AM feels extreme — but there’s good reason for it. Colca Canyon sits roughly 3 hours from Arequipa, and reaching Cruz del Cóndor by mid-morning maximizes your chances of catching Andean condors during their peak flying hours, which typically occur before the afternoon thermal winds shift. Sleeping early the night before genuinely makes a difference in how much you’ll enjoy the day ahead.

Setting Realistic Condor Expectations

Cruz del Cóndor is famous for good reason, but it’s worth understanding upfront: these are wild birds, not scheduled performers. Weather, wind patterns, and season all influence whether condors appear during your visit window. Most travelers do see them, but no honest tour operator can promise a sighting — anyone claiming otherwise isn’t being fully transparent about how wildlife actually works.

One of the World’s Deepest Canyons — Deeper Than You Might Expect

Colca Canyon reaches depths of over 3,270 meters in certain sections, making it more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in some measurements. This scale is difficult to appreciate from photos alone; standing at the rim genuinely puts into perspective how dramatic this landscape actually is.

The Altitude Factor Many Travelers Overlook

Patapampa, one of the tour’s viewpoints, sits at approximately 4,800 meters — higher than Everest Base Camp on the Nepal side. Since this is a single-day tour without gradual acclimatization, travelers coming directly from lower elevations (or straight from Lima) may notice altitude effects more than those who’ve already spent time in Cusco or other high-altitude Peruvian destinations. If you’re prone to altitude sensitivity, arriving in Arequipa a day or two early to adjust isn’t a bad idea.

Full Day vs. Overnight: Why This Format Works

Unlike the classic 2-day Colca Canyon tour that includes an overnight stay in Chivay, this full-day version compresses the entire experience into roughly 15 hours. This suits travelers with tighter schedules perfectly, though it does mean significant time spent traveling relative to time spent at each destination — a worthwhile tradeoff for those prioritizing efficiency over a more leisurely pace.

The Villages Deserve More Attention Than They Get

While Cruz del Cóndor understandably steals the spotlight, the stops in Maca and Yanque offer genuine insight into contemporary Andean life — colonial-era churches, traditional dress still worn daily rather than for tourists, and agricultural terraces that predate the Inca Empire itself. Don’t rush through these stops purely to reach the condor viewpoint faster.

Hot Springs: Worth the Extra Cost?

The optional hot springs (approximately S/15) offer a genuinely pleasant way to unwind after a long morning of sightseeing, particularly if the early wake-up and high-altitude stops have left you feeling stiff or tired. It’s not essential, but travelers who skip it sometimes regret not building in this relaxation break.

Packing for Dramatic Temperature Swings

Few single-day tours require this much climate versatility. You’ll experience near-freezing pre-dawn conditions during pickup, biting cold winds at Patapampa’s extreme altitude, and comfortably warm sunshine by midday in the valley itself. Genuine layering — not just a single jacket — makes the difference between a comfortable day and a miserable one.

Wildlife Beyond the Condors

While condors get top billing, keep an eye out during the Pampa Cañahuas National Reserve crossing for vicuñas, alpacas, and llamas grazing in their natural habitat, along with the possibility of spotting Andean flamingos, geese, and other high-altitude bird species — a nice bonus for travelers interested in South American wildlife beyond the headline attraction.

Who This Tour Suits Best

This full-day format works particularly well for travelers with limited time in Arequipa, those who prefer not to commit to an overnight stay away from the city, and anyone comfortable with a demanding but rewarding single day of travel. Travelers wanting more time to explore Chivay, additional trekking opportunities, or a more relaxed pace might consider the 2-day alternative instead.

A Final Practical Note

Given the genuinely long day involved — often 14-plus hours door to door — arriving in Arequipa with at least one full rest day beforehand ensures you’re not attempting this excursion while still fatigued from international travel. The Colca Canyon Tour from Arequipa rewards travelers who arrive well-rested far more than those squeezing it in immediately upon arrival.

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.
