Trip itinerary

Your Salkantay Pass Trek and Humantay Lake journey begins with hotel pick-up in Cusco, scheduled between 4:30 and 5:00 AM. Once the whole group is gathered, departure from Cusco happens around 5:15 AM for the 2-hour drive to Mollepata, where a stop for breakfast also includes paying the 20-sole entrance fee to the local municipality. From there, the drive continues for another hour to Soraypampa, where muleteers and horses await to carry the camping gear, food supplies, and each traveler’s 7 kg duffel bag of personal belongings.

From Soraypampa, a 2-hour uphill hike leads to the breathtaking Humantay Lake. Once there, you’ll have plenty of time to explore, snap photos, and learn from your guide about the cultural and natural significance of this striking turquoise glacial lake. After soaking in the views, a roughly 2-hour descent brings the group to the exclusive Quiswarniyoc Private Camp, where a fresh, home-style lunch awaits.

The afternoon is yours to enjoy at your own pace. For those craving more adventure, a short hike to the Salkantay Viewpoint offers a panoramic look at the surrounding region. If relaxation sounds better, you can unwind in your private Sky Star Dome — a cozy glass igloo equipped with a mattress, pillow, sleeping pad, and gentle evening lighting.

Set at 4,000 meters, Quiswarniyoc Camp is a scenic, exclusive setting featuring short trails, mountain views, waterfalls, and even friendly llamas ready for photos. It’s the perfect place to unwind, recharge, and take in the beauty of the Andes before tackling the trek’s most demanding day ahead.

Personal Expenses and Optional Activities

Any personal expenses or services not explicitly listed as included in your Salkantay Pass Trek and Humantay Lake package must be covered by the traveler. This may include extra snacks and drinks, personal purchases, tips, optional activities, and any additional services requested during the journey.

What to Pack for Your Salkantay Pass Trek and Humantay Lake

During pre-trek coordination, you’ll receive a duffel bag for up to 7 kg (15 lb) of personal belongings, transported by pack horses and accessible at each campsite. Throughout the day, you’ll only need a small daypack for your essentials.

  • Hiking Boots: Choose sturdy, comfortable hiking boots with solid grip and ankle support. The trail includes uneven, rocky, and occasionally slippery terrain, making proper footwear essential.
  • Small Daypack: Carry a lightweight daypack for daily essentials — water, snacks, sunscreen, rain gear, personal medication, and extra layers.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Bring a refillable bottle or hydration system. Purification tablets or a portable water filter can also add extra convenience.
  • Energy Snacks: While meals and daily snacks are included, packing extra high-energy options like granola bars, nuts, chocolate, dried fruit, or trail mix is a good idea.
  • Layered Clothing: Mountain temperatures shift quickly, so layer up — a moisture-wicking base layer, a warm fleece or insulated jacket, and a waterproof outer shell are all recommended.
  • Rain Protection: Pack a lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho, particularly important during the rainy season, since conditions can change without warning.
  • Hat and Sunglasses: Bring a sun hat or cap along with UV-protective sunglasses to guard against the intense high-altitude sun.
  • Sunscreen: Use a high-SPF product and reapply regularly throughout the day, especially at higher elevations.
  • Insect Repellent: Useful for warmer, lower sections of the route where mosquitoes and other insects may be present.
  • Extra Clothing: Pack a clean change of clothes, warm socks, and an additional thermal layer for the cooler evenings and mornings.
  • Warm Accessories: Gloves, a warm hat, and thermal socks are recommended, since nighttime temperatures can drop significantly.
  • Headlamp or Flashlight: Bring a headlamp or small flashlight for navigating the campsite before sunrise or after dark.
  • Trekking Poles: Highly recommended for balance and stability on steep ascents, descents, and uneven terrain.
  • Camera or Smartphone: Bring along a camera or fully charged smartphone to capture the mountain landscapes, Humantay Lake, and surrounding scenery.
  • Cash in Peruvian Soles: Carry a small amount of cash for personal purchases, local services, extra drinks, souvenirs, or other expenses not covered in the package.
  • Personal Medication: Include any prescribed medication or personal medical supplies you may need during the trek.

Practical Recommendations for Your Salkantay Pass Trek and Humantay Lake

To help you make the most of this unforgettable adventure, here are some essential tips to keep in mind before and during your Salkantay Pass Trek and Humantay Lake experience:

Acclimatize Before Your Trek

Since Day 1 already reaches Humantay Lake at high altitude, spending at least 1–2 days in Cusco beforehand to adjust to the elevation is highly recommended, especially if this is your first high-altitude activity.

Get a Good Night’s Rest Beforehand

Pick-up happens early (between 4:30 and 5:00 AM), so plan to sleep early the night before to handle the long first day comfortably.

Dress in Warm, Adjustable Layers

Temperatures can shift dramatically between daytime hiking and the cold nights at Quiswarniyoc Camp. Pack a thermal base layer, warm fleece, and insulated jacket to stay comfortable throughout.

Wear Broken-In Hiking Boots

The trail includes uneven, rocky terrain, so sturdy, comfortable hiking boots with good ankle support are essential for both days of trekking.

Stay Hydrated Throughout the Journey

High altitude dehydrates you faster than expected. Bring a reusable water bottle and drink regularly, especially during the climb to Salkantay Pass on Day 2.

Pack Trekking Poles for Extra Support

Since Day 2 involves a steep ascent and descent to the pass, trekking poles can significantly help with balance and reduce strain on your knees.

Protect Yourself from Intense UV Exposure

Sun exposure is particularly strong at high altitude. Pack high-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and UV-protective sunglasses, even on cloudy days.

Bring Extra Cash in Peruvian Soles

Since personal expenses, tips, and any additional purchases aren’t included, having small bills on hand will make your trip more convenient.

Take Advantage of Your Free Afternoon

Use your time at Quiswarniyoc Camp to relax in your Sky Star Dome, hike to the Salkantay Viewpoint, or simply enjoy the mountain scenery and llamas around camp.

Prepare for the Coldest Day of the Trek

Day 2 is both the most physically demanding and the coldest, so pack gloves, a warm hat, and thermal socks to stay comfortable during the early morning climb.

Bring a Fully Charged Camera or Phone

Both Humantay Lake and the panoramic views from Salkantay Pass offer incredible photo opportunities, so a portable charger is a great addition to your packing list.

Communicate Any Health Concerns in Advance

If you have mobility limitations, medical conditions, or concerns about the altitude, let your guide know beforehand so they can offer appropriate support throughout the trek.

Following these recommendations will help ensure your Salkantay Pass Trek and Humantay Lake experience is safe, comfortable, and truly memorable.

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.
