Trip itinerary

Highlight of the Day: Exploring the impressive archaeological complex of Waqrapukara.

Your Waqrapukara Trek from Cusco begins early, with pick-up from your accommodation around 4:00 AM, followed by a two-hour drive toward the town of Cusipata. Once there, you’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast to fuel up for the day ahead before continuing along the shores of the shimmering Pomacanchi Lagoon, framed by pastures and local farmland. This striking lagoon ranks as the second largest in the entire Cusco region.

From there, the journey continues for approximately 1.5 hours along an unpaved road toward the town of Santa Lucía, taking in stunning scenery and distant lagoon views along the way. From Santa Lucía, a final 30-minute drive brings you to the trailhead, where you’ll have time to gather your gear before setting off. The first hiking stretch runs about 1.5 hours, offering striking views of the Apurímac Canyon — one of Peru’s deepest — along with dramatic cliff-lined landscapes throughout.

Upon reaching the Waqrapukara viewpoint, you’ll have a moment to rest and capture your first photos of the fortress emerging dramatically on the edge of the canyon. From there, the trail climbs along a rocky path leading to the site itself, perched on a cliff’s edge, with sweeping views of the Apurímac River flowing far below.

Once at the ruins, you’ll spend roughly 1.5 hours exploring the archaeological complex, climbing through ancient temple remains and photographing the site’s famous horn-shaped rock formation alongside breathtaking canyon views. Waqrapukara also features intriguing structures dating back to both pre-Inca and Inca periods, along with terraces and rich historical context — making it an exceptional place to learn about ancient Andean civilization. This remarkable site is sure to leave a lasting impression from beginning to end.

Once the group is ready, the hike back retraces the same route. After approximately 1.5 hours of walking, private transportation picks you up for the journey back to Cusco, with arrival expected around 5:00 PM.

Vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary needs can be accommodated on request — a great way to unwind and savor local flavors after your Waqrapukara Trek from Cusco.

Professional Bilingual Guiding

Discover Waqrapukara alongside a knowledgeable guide fluent in both English and Spanish. Beyond coordinating the logistics of the day, your guide shares insights into the area’s culture, history, traditions, geography, and ecosystems. Expect clear guidance, prompt answers to your questions, hands-on support during the trek, and help adjusting to the altitude and terrain — all aimed at making your experience safe, educational, and memorable.

Intimate Group Setting

To ensure quality, personalized service, groups are generally kept to around 12–14 travelers, never exceeding 16. This smaller format allows your guide to give more individualized attention and support throughout the hike, while fostering a warmer, more sociable atmosphere and a smoother, more enjoyable outing overall.

Safety and Emergency Preparedness

Your wellbeing comes first on this trek. Guides carry a well-stocked first-aid kit and portable oxygen for quick response to altitude discomfort, minor injuries, or other unforeseen issues on the trail. Trained to spot signs of altitude sickness and manage them effectively, your guide will also offer tips on pacing, hydration, and safely acclimating to high elevations.

Drop-Off at Plaza Regocijo, Cusco

The tour wraps up with drop-off at the Machu Picchu Team office in Plaza Regocijo, just steps from the main Plaza de Armas. Expect to conclude around 5:00 PM.

Complimentary Luggage Storage

Booking your Waqrapukara Trek from Cusco with Machu Picchu Team includes free luggage storage at the main office, located one block from Cusco’s Plaza de Armas. Since the tour ends right there, picking up your belongings afterward is quick and hassle-free.

Waqrapukara Entrance Fee

Access to Waqrapukara isn’t bundled into the tour price and needs to be settled separately right at the local checkpoint.

  • Foreign visitors: 10 soles per person
  • Peruvian citizens: 10 soles per person

Bring cash in Peruvian soles, since credit and debit cards aren’t accepted at the entrance. Carrying the exact amount is recommended to keep the entry process quick and simple. These locally collected fees help support the maintenance, conservation, and protection of Waqrapukara and its surrounding natural environment.

What to Pack for Your Waqrapukara Trek from Cusco

This isn’t just a packing checklist — it’s your guide to arriving fully prepared for this high-altitude adventure.

  • Small daypack: A comfortable, lightweight backpack is essential for carrying your belongings throughout the trek.
  • Original passport or ID: Required for checkpoints along the way and entry to the archaeological site.
  • Water (at least 1.5 liters): High-altitude hiking dehydrates you faster than you’d expect. A reusable stainless steel bottle or hydration pack like a Camelbak makes staying properly hydrated much easier.
  • Water-resistant trekking shoes: Quality, waterproof boots with non-slip soles are non-negotiable for this trek, providing the traction needed on rocky, uneven, or potentially wet trail sections.
  • Layered clothing: Mountain weather is notoriously unpredictable. Pack warm layers — thermal underwear, a fleece, a hat, gloves, and warm socks. Synthetic fabrics work best since they dry quickly and wick away moisture.
  • Rain gear: A waterproof jacket or simple poncho is essential, since sudden showers can occur even during the dry season.
  • Sun protection: The sun at this altitude is remarkably intense. Bring high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Trekking pants: Comfortable, durable pants are a must for this journey.
  • Energy snacks: While meals are provided, packing your own energy bars, dried fruit, nuts, or chocolate gives you a quick boost whenever needed on the trail.
  • Personal medication kit: Beyond any personal prescriptions, include painkillers, blister tape (like Moleskin), and anything you might need for motion sickness.
  • Camera or smartphone: Bring a fully charged device with spare batteries or a portable power bank — the views along this Waqrapukara Trek from Cusco are simply too spectacular not to capture.
  • Cash for small expenses: Useful for tips or any personal purchases along the way.
  • Mosquito repellent: Not a major concern, but handy during early morning or late afternoon hours.
  • Bandana or buff: Incredibly versatile for protecting your face against wind, dust, or intense sun exposure.

Important Information for Visiting Waqrapukara

Waqrapukara is one of Peru’s most fascinating and less-crowded Andean destinations, and it can be visited year-round. However, weather and trail conditions vary significantly by season, so choosing the right time is key to a safer and more enjoyable trek.

  • The Rainy Season (November to April): During these months, the region sees its heaviest rainfall. Showers can be intense, especially in the afternoon and evening, making trails slippery and more challenging. However, this period also brings its own unique beauty, as the entire landscape transforms into a stunning, vibrant green. If you plan to visit now, waterproof gear—a poncho, waterproof pants, and sturdy boots—is essential. Trekking poles will become your best friend for maintaining balance.
  • The Dry Season (May to October): This is the most popular season for travelers, as rainfall is infrequent and the weather is more stable. Temperatures are cooler and more pleasant for hiking at high altitudes. If you prefer to avoid rain and enjoy clearer, more expansive views, the dry season is highly recommended. Even so, mountain weather is famously unpredictable, so it’s always wise to be prepared for unexpected changes.

Climate

The climate at Waqrapukara is defined by its high altitude and the region’s seasonal shifts. The rainy season turns the landscape into a lush, green paradise, which is visually stunning. The dry season offers stable weather with clear skies, perfect for trekking. Daytime temperatures can be warm and pleasant, but mornings and evenings get quite cold, especially at the highest points.

Altitude

Waqrapukara sits above 4,000 meters (over 13,000 feet), meaning the trek takes place entirely at high altitude. At these heights, there is less oxygen in the air, which can cause altitude sickness if you’re not properly acclimatized. It’s crucial to allow your body to adjust. Plan to spend at least a couple of days in Cusco or another high-altitude area before starting your trek. Physical exertion at altitude also increases the risk of dehydration, as the dry air causes you to lose fluids faster. Staying well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water regularly is fundamental.

Preparation and Recommendations

  • Clothing & Equipment: Layering is the golden rule. Start with a thermal base layer for the cold mornings, switch to light, breathable clothing during the day’s hike, and always have a waterproof outer layer ready. A hat, gloves, a scarf, and sun protection are non-negotiable.
  • Hydration: Dehydration is a common issue on mountain treks. Carry enough water for the entire day and sip it constantly. While there are natural water sources, it’s safest to bring a water filter or purification tablets.
  • Physical Preparation: Waqrapukara is a moderately demanding trek. Being in good physical condition is essential to enjoy it fully. The hike can last several hours over steep inclines and uneven terrain, requiring endurance and a steady pace. Undertaking some preparatory hikes will help acclimatize your body.
  • Food & Energy: Pack energy-rich snacks like cereal bars, nuts, and chocolate to maintain your energy levels. Lunch on the trail, often enjoyed with a view of the Apurímac River canyon, is part of the experience.
  • Safety & Accessibility: While the route is less traveled than others in Peru, the mountainous terrain carries inherent risks, especially in the rainy season when trails can become treacherous. An expert guide will know the route and potential hazards intimately.

With the right preparation, a visit to Waqrapukara will be an incredibly rewarding experience. Whether you go during the lush rainy season or the clear dry season, you’ll be treated to stunning views, fascinating history, and the physical challenge of an epic Andean trek.

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.
