Trip itinerary

Your ATV Tour to Maras and Moray from Cusco begins with pick-up from the Machu Picchu Team office or a previously agreed meeting point in central Cusco. Morning departures typically start around 7:00 AM, with the exact time confirmed ahead of your tour. From there, tourist transportation carries you toward the Sacred Valley, passing through scenic Andean landscapes with views of agricultural fields, traditional communities, and snow-capped peaks like Verónica and Chicón.

Arrival at the Cruzpata ATV Base
After approximately one to one-and-a-half hours of driving, the group arrives at the ATV base in Cruzpata. Before hitting the trail, your guide provides a complete safety briefing along with instructions on operating the ATV. Each traveler receives a helmet and participates in a short practice session to get comfortable with the controls — no previous ATV experience is necessary, though all participants must follow their guide’s safety instructions throughout the activity.

ATV Ride to Moray
Once everyone is ready, the group sets off on an approximately 40-minute ATV ride toward the Moray archaeological site, following rural roads and dirt trails surrounded by farmland, Andean communities, and sweeping views of the Sacred Valley. Exact timing may vary slightly depending on group pace and trail conditions.

Guided Visit to Moray
At Moray, ATVs are parked in a designated area while the visit continues on foot. Your guide explains the significance of Moray’s impressive circular terraces, believed to have served as an Inca agricultural laboratory for studying crop conditions and microclimates. You’ll have approximately 20 to 30 minutes to explore the site, take photos, and enjoy the surrounding scenery. Note that Moray’s entrance fee isn’t included unless specifically stated in your reservation.

Return Ride to Cruzpata
After the Moray visit, the group heads back to the ATV base along a scenic route. Depending on weather, visibility, and trail conditions, a stop at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the surrounding valleys and mountains may be included. This return ride takes approximately 40 minutes.

Transfer to the Maras Salt Mines
Upon returning to Cruzpata, ATVs are left behind as the group continues by tourist vehicle toward the Maras Salt Mines. Since the final stretch involves steep slopes, narrow sections, and sharp curves, this portion of the ATV Tour to Maras and Moray is completed by vehicle rather than ATV, in line with safety regulations.

Visit to the Maras Salt Mines
At the Salineras de Maras, you’ll see thousands of salt pools spread across the mountainside, fed by a natural saltwater spring. Local families have managed these pools for generations using traditional harvesting techniques. Your guide explains how the salt is collected, processed, and distributed, along with the site’s cultural and economic significance. There’s time to take photos and purchase locally produced salt or other regional goods. Note that admission to the Maras Salt Mines isn’t included unless stated in your booking confirmation.

Return to Cusco
After the visit, tourist transportation brings the group back to Cusco, with arrival expected between approximately 1:30 and 2:00 PM, depending on traffic, weather, trail conditions, and group pace. Drop-off is generally provided near Plaza Regocijo or another central Cusco location.

Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know About the ATV Tour to Maras and Moray from CuscoWhether

Whether you’re looking to add some adrenaline to your Sacred Valley itinerary or simply want a different way to explore Cusco’s most iconic landmarks, this guide covers everything worth knowing before booking your ATV Tour to Maras and Moray from Cusco.

Why Choose an ATV Tour Over a Regular Van Tour

While traditional Sacred Valley tours take you comfortably from one site to another by vehicle, an ATV tour lets you actively experience the landscape — riding through rural trails, farmland, and Andean scenery rather than simply viewing it through a window. It’s an excellent choice for travelers who want their sightseeing to double as an adventure activity.

No Experience Necessary

One of the most common concerns travelers have is whether they need prior ATV experience. The answer is no — every tour begins with a thorough safety briefing and hands-on practice session at the Cruzpata base, ensuring both first-timers and experienced riders feel confident before hitting the trail.

Understanding the Route Structure

It’s worth knowing upfront that this tour combines two different modes of transportation. The ATV portion covers the ride between Cruzpata and Moray (roughly 80 minutes round trip), while the journey to the Maras Salt Mines is completed by tourist vehicle due to the steep, narrow terrain leading there. This isn’t a limitation — it’s a safety measure that still delivers a complete, well-rounded day exploring both sites.

Individual vs. Double ATV: Which to Choose

Solo travelers or those wanting the full hands-on experience typically opt for the individual ATV ($40 USD), giving each person their own vehicle to drive independently. Couples or friends traveling together sometimes prefer the double ATV ($55 USD for two), which allows for shared costs and the option to switch drivers along the route, provided conditions and safety requirements are met.

What Makes Moray and Maras Worth the Trip

Beyond the adventure element, this tour connects two remarkably different Inca-era sites. Moray’s circular terraces reveal sophisticated agricultural engineering, believed to have functioned as a testing ground for crops across varying microclimates. The Maras Salt Mines, by contrast, showcase an entirely different kind of ingenuity — thousands of salt pools still harvested using techniques passed down through generations of local families.

Best Time of Year to Go

Like most Sacred Valley activities, this tour operates best during the dry season (May to October), when trail conditions are more predictable and visibility is at its clearest for photos and panoramic viewpoints. During the rainy season (November to April), the tour still runs, but packing proper rain gear becomes essential.

Budgeting for the Full Day

While the ATV service itself is clearly priced, remember to budget separately for entrance fees (70 soles for Moray, 20 soles for Maras), plus any meals, snacks, or souvenirs you might want along the way, since these aren’t included in the base tour price.

Who This Tour Is Best Suited For

This experience works well for adventure-seeking travelers, couples wanting a shared activity, and anyone who’s already visited the Sacred Valley by traditional means and wants a fresh way to experience it. It’s less suited for travelers with mobility limitations or those uncomfortable with off-road vehicles, given the hands-on nature of the activity.

Final Tip

Since this tour combines two very different terrains — dusty rural trails and paved mountain roads — dressing in breathable, durable layers and packing a scarf or bandana to cover your face during dustier stretches can make a noticeable difference in your comfort throughout the day.

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.
