Trip itinerary

1:00 PM — Meeting at the Machu Picchu Office
Your City Tour in Cusco kicks off at the Machu Picchu office, located at Portal Nuevo 270, Plaza Regocijo, right in the historic center. After a brief welcome, you’ll walk over to Koricancha, the celebrated Temple of the Sun.

Guided Visit to Koricancha
Spend roughly an hour exploring Koricancha, one of the Inca Empire’s most sacred religious sites, where your guide will highlight the exceptional stonework and the striking fusion of Inca and Spanish colonial design.

Sacsayhuamán
From Koricancha, the group boards tourist transportation and heads to Sacsayhuamán, a monumental archaeological complex perched above Cusco. Your guide will walk you through its historical significance as you take in the massive, precisely interlocked stone walls and panoramic city views.

Q’enqo
Next comes Q’enqo, a significant Inca ceremonial center known for its carved rock passages, underground chambers, and ritual spaces. Here, you’ll learn about the religious ceremonies believed to have unfolded at this enigmatic site.

Puka Pukara
The tour continues to Puka Pukara, widely known as the Red Fortress. This archaeological site is thought to have functioned as a military checkpoint, administrative hub, and rest stop for travelers entering the city.

Tambomachay
The archaeological portion wraps up at Tambomachay, a serene site celebrated for its skillfully built aqueducts, canals, and ceremonial fountains — believed to be tied to water worship and possibly used as a retreat for Inca royalty.

6:00 PM — Return to Cusco
After Tambomachay, tourist transportation brings the group back to Cusco, with the tour concluding around 6:00 PM in the historic center, close to the Machu Picchu Team office.

What is included

Professional English-Speaking Guide

Your City Tour in Cusco is led by a certified guide fluent in both English and Spanish. Throughout the afternoon, they’ll walk you through the history, architecture, religious significance, and cultural importance of Koricancha, Sacsayhuamán, Qenqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay — with explanations that are clear, informative, and easy to follow, giving you a richer understanding of Inca civilization and Cusco’s historical development.

Comfortable Tourist Transportation

Transfers between the archaeological sites located outside the historic center are included, using regularly maintained vehicles driven by experienced local drivers. You’ll travel safely and comfortably while taking in views of Cusco and the surrounding Andean landscape along the way.

Small-Group Setting

The afternoon City Tour in Cusco typically runs with 12 to 14 travelers, with 16 as the maximum group size. Keeping numbers limited leads to smoother coordination, easier communication with your guide, and a more relaxed visit at each stop — plus more opportunities to ask questions, snap photos, and get personal support throughout the tour.

Return and Drop-Off in Cusco

The tour concludes around 6:00 PM in Cusco’s historic center, with the main drop-off point near the Machu Picchu Team office in Plaza Regocijo, just a block from the Plaza de Armas. The exact return time may shift slightly depending on traffic and the group’s pace.

Complimentary Luggage Storage

Booking your City Tour in Cusco with Machu Picchu Team means free luggage storage at our main office. Since the tour starts and ends nearby, picking up your belongings afterward is quick and convenient.

Safety and Support

Your safety and comfort matter to us. Guides carry a basic first-aid kit and are ready to help with minor health issues or unexpected situations along the way. While this is a cultural and archaeological outing rather than a strenuous hike, some sites feature stone steps, uneven surfaces, slopes, and elevations reaching approximately 3,700 meters above sea level. Your guide will share safety guidance, maintain a comfortable pace, and offer assistance whenever it’s needed.

Koricancha Entrance Fee

Access to the Koricancha Temple isn’t part of the tour price and needs to be paid separately at the entrance.

  • Admission cost: 20 soles per person

This fee is settled directly at Koricancha upon arrival, so bringing cash in Peruvian soles is recommended to keep the process quick and hassle-free.

Entrance Fee for the Remaining Four Archaeological Sites

Visiting Sacsayhuamán, Qenqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay requires a valid Cusco Tourist Ticket, known locally as the Boleto Turístico del Cusco.

  • Partial Tourist Ticket: 70 soles per person

This ticket grants access to all four sites featured on the City Tour in Cusco. If you already hold a valid General Tourist Ticket covering Cusco and the Sacred Valley, you can use it instead, provided it hasn’t expired and those specific sites haven’t already been redeemed. The ticket is generally available for purchase right at the first archaeological stop, and payment must be made in cash and Peruvian soles, since cards and digital payments may not be accepted.

Important: Keep in mind that the Koricancha entrance fee and the Cusco Tourist Ticket are two separate payments. Altogether, travelers should budget roughly 90 soles per person to cover all entrance fees required during the tour.

Essential Packing List for Your City Tour in Cusco – Afternoon Departure

  • Bring a hat or cap for sun protection.

Practical Recommendations for Your City Tour in Cusco (Afternoon Departure)

To help you get the most out of your City Tour in Cusco (Afternoon Departure), here are some useful tips to keep in mind before and during your visit:

Make the Most of Your Free Morning

Since this tour departs at 1:00 PM, take advantage of the morning to rest, have a relaxed breakfast, or explore the historic center independently — it’s also a good window to visit Cusco Cathedral, which isn’t included in this itinerary.

Use It to Start Acclimatizing

If you’ve just arrived in Cusco, this afternoon tour is a gentle way to begin adjusting to the altitude before tackling more demanding activities like the Inca Trail, Salkantay Trek, Rainbow Mountain, or Humantay Lake.

Eat a Proper Lunch Beforehand

Since the tour runs straight through the afternoon without a meal stop, have lunch before the 1:00 PM departure so you have enough energy for the walks ahead.

Stay Hydrated Throughout the Tour

Altitude can dehydrate you faster than expected. Bring a reusable water bottle and drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel particularly thirsty.

Wear Comfortable, Supportive Shoes

Several archaeological sites — particularly Sacsayhuamán and Qenqo — include stairs, stone paths, and uneven terrain, so proper walking shoes will make a real difference.

Dress in Layers

Afternoons in Cusco can start warm and sunny but cool down quickly as evening approaches, especially at higher-elevation sites like Puka Pukara. A light jacket or sweater you can easily add or remove is ideal.

Protect Yourself from the Sun

The Andean sun is strong even on cloudy days. Sunscreen, a hat, and UV-protective sunglasses are essential during the outdoor portions of the tour.

Bring Enough Cash in Soles

Since the tour doesn’t include the Koricancha entrance fee or the Cusco Tourist Ticket, budget around 90 soles per person for these, plus extra for snacks or souvenirs. Cash in Peruvian soles is required, as cards aren’t widely accepted at entrances.

Carry Your ID and Booking Confirmation

Bring your passport or valid identification, along with your booking confirmation, in case it’s needed at any of the archaeological sites.

Communicate Any Health Concerns in Advance

If you have mobility limitations, a medical condition, or concerns about the altitude, let your guide know before or at the start of the tour so they can offer appropriate support.

Pack Light

Since the tour involves entering several archaeological sites throughout the afternoon, avoid bringing large or bulky bags — a small daypack is more than enough for your essentials.

Plan Your Evening Ahead

With the tour wrapping up around 6:00 PM, this leaves the evening free for dinner or additional activities in Cusco’s historic center — a great way to round out your day.

Following these simple recommendations will help ensure your afternoon City Tour in Cusco is comfortable, informative, and enjoyable from start to finish.

Does this tour help with altitude acclimatization?

Yes. The City Tour in Cusco (Afternoon Departure) is a great starting point for adjusting to the altitude before tackling more demanding activities like the Salkantay Trek, the Inca Trail, Rainbow Mountain, or Humantay Lake. Since the tour stays within and around Cusco, it involves short, easy walks between archaeological sites, making it a practical first outing for recently arrived travelers who want to gauge how their body handles the elevation before the rest of the day continues. We suggest taking things at a relaxed pace, drinking plenty of water, and letting your guide know right away if you experience any discomfort.

Why isn’t Cusco Cathedral part of the City Tour itinerary?

Cusco Cathedral is left off this route simply because it’s easy to visit independently in the historic center — it sits right in the Plaza de Armas, within walking distance. In some cases, entry may be possible during morning religious services, typically between 6:00 and 8:00 AM, which means travelers booked on the afternoon departure have the option to visit the Cathedral earlier that same day, before the 1:00 PM tour begins. Access and conditions can vary, so it’s worth checking the latest schedule before heading over. Instead, the City Tour in Cusco itinerary focuses on Koricancha, Sacsayhuamán, Qenqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay.

What makes this tour worth taking?

The City Tour in Cusco (Afternoon Departure) offers one of the simplest, most budget-friendly ways to experience Cusco’s key Inca and colonial landmarks. Throughout the tour, you’ll visit significant archaeological sites, learn about the history of the ancient Inca capital, and receive expert explanations from a bilingual professional guide. Visiting these locations independently tends to be more complicated and costly, since they’re scattered outside the city center — you’d need to arrange multiple taxis or private transfers and manage your own timing. With a guided tour, transportation, scheduling, and site visits are all handled for you, making for a far more relaxed experience — and since this option runs in the afternoon, your morning stays free for resting, having breakfast, or exploring the historic center on your own.

Do I need to be in great physical shape?

Not necessarily. The walks involved are generally short and manageable, though some sites do feature stairs, stone paths, slopes, and uneven ground. You don’t need hiking experience, but a basic level of mobility is helpful. Guides keep a comfortable pace and offer assistance whenever it’s needed — just let us know beforehand if you have any medical conditions, mobility concerns, or altitude-related worries.

Is it possible to cancel or reschedule my booking?

Yes. Cancellations or date changes made at least 24 hours before the scheduled 1:00 PM departure come at no extra cost, subject to availability. Keep in mind that online payment or card processing fees may not be refundable, even when the tour itself qualifies for a refund.

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.
