Trip itinerary

Your Rainbow Mountain by ATV adventure begins with early hotel pick-up in Cusco, scheduled between 3:30 and 4:00 AM. The exact time is confirmed the day before departure. Once the group is gathered, comfortable tourist transportation heads south from Cusco. This early start allows the group to reach the mountain area before peak visiting hours, taking advantage of better morning light and conditions.

Breakfast Stop
After approximately 1.5 hours of travel, the group stops at a local restaurant for breakfast, giving everyone time to enjoy a warm meal, use restroom facilities, and prepare for the high-altitude adventure ahead. From there, the journey continues toward the community of Japura, where the ATV activity begins.

5:00–7:30 AM: Transfer to Japura and ATV Safety Briefing
The drive from the breakfast stop to Japura takes roughly an hour, depending on road and weather conditions. Upon arrival, your guide walks through the complete itinerary, ATV driving procedures, safety guidelines, and proper equipment use. Each participant receives a helmet and takes part in a brief practice session before setting off. No prior ATV experience is needed, though all travelers must follow the guide’s instructions throughout the activity.

ATV Ride toward Rainbow Mountain
Once the group is ready, the ATV adventure begins through stunning high-Andean terrain. The route passes through wide valleys, rural mountain trails, traditional communities, and grazing areas where llamas, alpacas, and other Andean wildlife are commonly spotted. This portion of the Rainbow Mountain by ATV tour takes approximately one hour, though timing may vary based on trail conditions and group pace.

At the end of the ride, ATVs are parked in the designated area as the group prepares for the final stretch toward the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint.

7:30–9:30 AM: Final Walk to Rainbow Mountain
From the ATV parking area, a final uphill walk of approximately 35 to 45 minutes leads to the main viewpoint. While considerably shorter than the traditional hiking route, this stretch takes place at high altitude and should be completed at a relaxed pace, with your guide accompanying the group and offering support along the way.

Travelers who’d prefer not to walk may have the option to rent a horse or use another locally operated transport service offered directly by community providers. This service is optional, subject to availability, and paid separately in cash, with an approximate cost of 100 Peruvian soles — though local providers may adjust pricing without prior notice.

Guided Visit at Rainbow Mountain
Upon reaching Rainbow Mountain — also known as Vinicunca or Vinicunka — you’ll have time to take in the panoramic views, snap photos, record videos, and appreciate the mountain’s striking natural colors. Your guide explains the geological formation behind the mountain, the surrounding high-Andean ecosystem, and the area’s cultural significance.

Time spent at the viewpoint may vary depending on weather, visibility, visitor flow, and group pace.

Return to the ATV Parking Area and Japura
After the viewpoint visit, the group walks back to the ATV parking area before beginning the return ride along the same mountain route toward Japura. Upon arrival at the base, participants return their vehicles and safety gear before boarding the tourist vehicle.

10:30 AM–5:00 PM: Buffet Lunch and Return to Cusco
Following the ATV activity, the group heads to a local restaurant for a buffet lunch — a well-earned chance to rest and recharge after the morning’s adventure. Afterward, the return journey to Cusco begins, with arrival expected around 4:00 PM, though exact timing may shift depending on traffic, weather, road conditions, and group pace.

The tour concludes near Plaza Regocijo, in Cusco’s historic center.

Tour Schedule Summary

What is included

Hotel Pick-Up in Cusco

Pick-up from your hotel or accommodation in Cusco is included, available from selected locations within or near the historic center. Your exact pick-up time is confirmed the day before departure. Travelers staying outside the standard pick-up zone may be asked to meet at the Machu Picchu Team office or another designated point.

Round-Trip Tourist Transportation

Comfortable tourist transportation is included for the complete journey — from Cusco to the ATV base and back to the city. This also covers transfers between the breakfast and lunch locations, the ATV starting point, and every scheduled stop throughout your Rainbow Mountain by ATV itinerary.

Return to Cusco’s Historic Center

At the end of the tour, transportation brings you back to Cusco, with drop-off generally provided near Plaza Regocijo or another designated location in the historic center. Estimated arrival is around 4:00 PM, though timing may vary depending on traffic, weather, road conditions, and group pace.

Professional Bilingual Tour Guide

A guide fluent in English and Spanish accompanies the group throughout the entire tour, coordinating logistics, providing safety instructions, leading the ATV route, assisting during the final walk, and explaining the geological, cultural, and natural significance of Rainbow Mountain.

Breakfast and Buffet Lunch

A warm breakfast is included during the journey out to Rainbow Mountain. After completing the ATV activity and viewpoint visit, the group stops at a local restaurant for a buffet lunch. Vegetarian and other dietary options may be arranged with advance notice.

ATV and Safety Helmet

Your Rainbow Mountain by ATV package includes use of an ATV for the scheduled mountain route, along with a safety helmet. Before starting, every participant receives driving instructions, a safety briefing, and a short practice session. Wearing the helmet and following guide instructions is mandatory throughout the activity.

Driving Instructions and Practice Session

Before setting off, your guide provides clear instructions on starting, accelerating, braking, turning, and safely maneuvering the vehicle across curves, slopes, and uneven terrain. Participants also learn key safety rules, including maintaining safe following distance, staying on the established route, and avoiding overtaking other ATVs. After this briefing, each driver completes a short, supervised practice session in a safe area to get comfortable with the controls. No previous ATV experience is required, though participants must demonstrate they can operate the vehicle safely and follow guide instructions before the tour begins.

Fuel

All fuel needed for the scheduled ATV route is included in the tour price, with no additional fuel costs required during the excursion.

Personal Travel Insurance

Personal travel insurance isn’t included in the tour price. We strongly recommend that every traveler purchase comprehensive coverage before arriving in Peru, ideally including medical emergencies, accidents, high-altitude activities, trip interruptions, and emergency evacuation.

ATV Damage and Accident Insurance

Insurance covering ATV damage isn’t included. Each participant is responsible for operating their vehicle carefully and following all safety instructions provided by the guide. Travelers may be held responsible for repair or replacement costs should the ATV suffer damage due to careless driving, failure to follow instructions, unauthorized use, or an avoidable accident.

Beverages

Bottled water, soft drinks, energy drinks, alcoholic beverages, and other additional drinks aren’t included unless specifically stated in your booking confirmation. We recommend bringing sufficient drinking water for the activity, with additional beverages available for purchase at local restaurants or designated stops, subject to availability.

Rainbow Mountain Entrance Fee

The entrance fee to Rainbow Mountain — also known as Vinicunca or the Mountain of Seven Colors — isn’t included in your Rainbow Mountain by ATV tour price. This fee, approximately 30 Peruvian soles per person, must be paid directly at the local control point, preferably in cash and Peruvian soles. Note that the local community may adjust this admission price without prior notice.

Other Personal Expenses

Optional horse rental, local transportation services, snacks, souvenirs, photographs, tips, and any other service not explicitly listed in the official inclusions aren’t covered by the tour price.

What to Pack for Your Rainbow Mountain by ATV Tour

The Rainbow Mountain by ATV experience takes place at high altitude, where early-morning temperatures can drop significantly and weather conditions can shift rapidly. Although riding an ATV greatly reduces the walking distance, a final uphill stretch remains necessary to reach the main viewpoint. Dressing appropriately helps keep you warm, comfortable, and protected from sun, wind, rain, dust, and cold throughout the day.

What to Wear

  • Layer up: Wear several lightweight layers you can add or remove as temperatures shift throughout the day.
  • Comfortable hiking pants: Choose flexible, durable, quick-drying pants suited for both ATV riding and high-altitude walking.
  • Hiking shoes or boots: Opt for sturdy, closed-toe footwear with good grip and ankle support.
  • Warm waterproof jacket: Bring protection against strong wind, cold temperatures, and possible rain or snow.
  • Thermal base layer: A warm long-sleeved shirt or thermal top is recommended, especially for the early-morning departure.
  • Warm hat or beanie: Shield your head and ears from cold and wind.
  • Gloves: Useful during the ATV ride and at the viewpoint itself.
  • Neck buff or scarf: Adds extra protection against cold air, wind, and dust.
  • UV-protective sunglasses: Helps guard your eyes against intense sunlight and dust along the route.

Avoid jeans, sandals, flip-flops, open-toe shoes, or loose clothing — these are uncomfortable, offer limited protection, and aren’t suitable for operating an ATV.

What to Carry in Your Backpack

  • Drinking water: Bring enough to stay hydrated throughout the activity.
  • High-energy snacks: Energy bars, nuts, chocolate, or dried fruit provide a helpful boost.
  • High-SPF sunscreen: Sun exposure is intense at high altitude, even under cloudy skies.
  • Rain poncho: Weather can change suddenly, particularly during the rainy season.
  • An extra warm layer: Pack a fleece, sweater, or lightweight down jacket in case temperatures drop further.
  • Personal medication: Bring any prescriptions along with anything you typically use for altitude-related discomfort.
  • Camera or smartphone: Keep your device in a protective case to capture photos and videos.
  • Cash in Peruvian soles: Needed for the Rainbow Mountain entrance fee, optional horse rental, drinks, snacks, tips, and other purchases.
  • Original passport or ID: Carry valid identification in case it’s requested at a control point.
  • Waterproof bag or cover: Protects your passport, phone, camera, and other valuables from rain, mud, and dust.

For your Rainbow Mountain by ATV adventure, use a small, comfortable backpack and pack only what’s truly essential for the day.

Rainbow Mountain by ATV: Pricing

Pricing for the Rainbow Mountain by ATV tour from Cusco depends on the type of ATV service selected. Travelers can choose between an individual ATV or a double ATV shared between two people.

INDIVIDUAL ATV: USD 70 PER PERSON

This option provides one ATV per traveler, with each participant driving their own vehicle along the authorized route, following the guide and all established safety guidelines. This service is best suited for travelers wanting the complete, independent driving experience.

DOUBLE ATV: USD 99 FOR TWO PEOPLE

This option lets two travelers share a single ATV, with one person driving while the other rides as a passenger. Switching drivers may be possible during the route, provided both travelers meet safety requirements and the guide confirms that trail and weather conditions allow it. This $99 USD rate covers two people on one vehicle — though the ATV itself is shared, both travelers still receive full transportation, meals, guide service, safety assistance, and all other included benefits of the Rainbow Mountain by ATV experience.

FAQs: Rainbow Mountain by ATV Tour

1. Do I need previous ATV experience to join this tour?

No, previous experience isn’t required. Before starting the route, your guide provides a complete safety briefing along with a hands-on practice session, ensuring every participant feels comfortable operating the ATV before heading out.

2. Do I still need to walk to reach Rainbow Mountain?

Yes, though significantly less than the traditional route. After the ATV ride, a final uphill walk of approximately 35 to 45 minutes is required to reach the main viewpoint, since ATVs aren’t permitted the entire way due to terrain and conservation regulations.

3. What’s the difference between an individual and double ATV?

The individual ATV ($70 USD) lets each traveler drive their own vehicle throughout the route, while the double ATV ($99 USD for two people) allows two travelers to share one vehicle, taking turns driving when conditions and safety requirements permit.

4. Is the entrance fee to Rainbow Mountain included in the tour price?

No, the entrance fee (approximately 30 Peruvian soles per person) isn’t included and must be paid directly at the local control point, preferably in cash and Peruvian soles.

5. How early does the tour start, and why?

The tour begins very early, with hotel pick-up between 3:30 and 4:00 AM. This early departure allows the group to reach the mountain before peak visiting hours and enjoy better morning light and less crowded conditions at the viewpoint.

6. What should I wear for this tour?

Dressing in layers is essential, since temperatures can be very cold in the early morning and shift quickly throughout the day. A warm waterproof jacket, thermal base layer, gloves, and a hat are all recommended, along with sturdy footwear suited for both ATV riding and walking.

7. Is horseback riding available for those who don’t want to walk the final stretch?

Yes, horse rental is available as an optional service from local community providers, though it’s not included in the tour price and must be paid separately in cash, generally around 100 Peruvian soles.

8. Are meals included in this tour?

Yes, both breakfast during the outbound journey and a buffet lunch after the ATV activity are included. Beverages beyond what’s served with meals aren’t covered and can be purchased separately.

9. What happens if I damage the ATV during the tour?

Since ATV damage insurance isn’t included, travelers may be responsible for repair or replacement costs if damage occurs due to careless driving, failure to follow safety instructions, or an avoidable accident.

10. What’s the cancellation policy for this tour?

Cancellations made before 7:00 PM the day prior to your tour are eligible for a full refund. Cancellations after this deadline, same-day cancellations, late arrivals, or no-shows are non-refundable, and card-processing fees remain non-refundable in all cases.

Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know About the Rainbow Mountain by ATV Tour

Whether you’ve heard about Rainbow Mountain’s famous crowds and long hike or simply want a more adventurous way to reach this natural wonder, this guide covers everything worth knowing before booking your Rainbow Mountain by ATV Tour.

Why Choose ATV Over the Traditional Hike

The classic Rainbow Mountain trek involves several hours of high-altitude walking, which can be physically demanding and time-consuming for travelers with limited mobility or time constraints. The ATV alternative dramatically reduces the walking distance to just 35–45 minutes each way, making this iconic destination accessible to a wider range of travelers while adding an extra layer of adventure to the experience.

Understanding the Early Start

Yes, 3:30 AM feels brutal — but there’s genuine strategy behind it. Rainbow Mountain has become one of Peru’s most visited attractions, and arriving early means beating both the crowds and the afternoon clouds that often roll in and obscure the mountain’s famous colors. Early risers are typically rewarded with clearer skies and a more peaceful viewpoint experience.

The Altitude Factor Nobody Warns You About Enough

Rainbow Mountain sits above 5,000 meters, making it higher than many well-known trekking destinations, including sections of the Inca Trail. Even with the ATV significantly cutting down walking distance, the remaining hike happens in genuinely thin air. Spending a few days in Cusco beforehand to acclimatize isn’t just a suggestion — it meaningfully improves how much you’ll actually enjoy the final stretch.

What “Individual” vs. “Double” ATV Really Means for Your Experience

Choosing an individual ATV means full control and independence throughout the ride, ideal for confident riders or those traveling solo. The double ATV option works well for couples or friends wanting to share the experience (and the cost), though it’s worth noting that only one person drives at a time — planning who takes the wheel first can avoid last-minute negotiations at the starting point.

Weather Can Make or Break Your Photos

Rainbow Mountain’s iconic colors are best appreciated under clear skies, but Andean weather is notoriously unpredictable. The dry season (May to October) generally offers better visibility, while the rainy season (November to April) brings a real chance of clouds obscuring the view entirely. This is largely out of anyone’s control, so building flexibility into your expectations helps avoid disappointment.

The Optional Horse: When It Actually Makes Sense

While walking the final stretch is entirely manageable for most fit travelers, the horse rental option exists for good reason — some visitors underestimate how altitude affects their stamina until they’re already on the trail. If you have any doubts about completing the walk comfortably, budgeting for this optional service (around 100 soles, paid directly to local providers) removes unnecessary stress from your day.

Layering Isn’t Optional Here

The temperature swing during this tour is dramatic: near-freezing conditions during the early morning ATV ride, followed by intense high-altitude sun once you’re standing at the viewpoint. Travelers who pack a single jacket often find themselves either too cold or overheating and sweating through their base layers. True layering — with pieces you can add and remove throughout the day — makes a noticeable difference in comfort.

What Happens If the Mountain Is Cloudy

Unlike Machu Picchu, where the site itself remains impressive regardless of weather, Rainbow Mountain’s entire appeal rests on visibility of its color bands. If you arrive during heavy cloud cover, no tour operator can guarantee the view will clear — this is simply a risk inherent to visiting a mountain range at extreme altitude, and it applies equally to every tour operator running this route.

Who This Tour Is Genuinely Best For

This ATV option particularly suits travelers who want the Rainbow Mountain experience without the extended physical demands of the full hike, adventure seekers looking to combine sightseeing with an adrenaline activity, and anyone visiting Cusco with limited time who still wants to check this iconic destination off their list without dedicating a full day to walking.

A Final, Honest Note

The Rainbow Mountain by ATV Tour isn’t necessarily “easier” than the traditional hike in every sense — you’re still navigating high altitude and a meaningful uphill walk. What it genuinely offers is a different kind of day: part off-road adventure, part natural wonder, wrapped into one memorable experience that feels distinctly different from a standard sightseeing tour.

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.
