Tour Overview

Explore the Moray and Maras Salt Mines Tour: The Moray and Maras Salt Mines Tour invites you to uncover two of the Sacred Valley’s most remarkable archaeological wonders on this engaging half-day excursion. The day starts at 8:45 AM with pick-up from our office at Portal Nuevo 270, Plaza Regocijo, just a short walk from Cusco’s iconic Plaza de Armas. From there, travel in comfort aboard our modern tourist vehicles while bilingual expert guides share fascinating insights into the region’s cultural legacy along the way.

Your first destination is Moray, celebrated for its extraordinary set of Inca agricultural terraces. Ancient engineers shaped concentric circular depressions into the landscape, generating distinct microclimates that allowed crops from various altitudes to be tested and cultivated — a striking display of Inca innovation. The tour then continues to the breathtaking Maras Salt Mines, where more than 3,000 individual pools cascade down the mountainside in a stunning golden-white mosaic. These pools have been worked by local families for generations, relying on the same traditional harvesting methods passed down through the centuries. Throughout the excursion, you’ll have ample chances to capture photos and genuinely connect with the landscapes and living traditions of the Sacred Valley. The tour wraps up around 3:30 PM with drop-off back in Cusco’s city center.

Comfortable Tourist Transportation

Travel in comfort through the stunning scenery of the Sacred Valley aboard modern, well-maintained tourist vehicles, designed to make the journey smooth and enjoyable from start to finish.

Small-Group Setting

This tour typically runs with 12 to 14 travelers, capped at a maximum of 16 participants. Keeping the group size limited allows for smoother coordination, closer interaction with your guide, and a more relaxed visit at each site — plus more opportunities to ask questions and receive personalized attention along the way.

Return and Drop-Off in Cusco

The tour concludes around 3:00 PM, with drop-off at the Machu Picchu Team office in Plaza Regocijo, just one block from the Plaza de Armas.

Complimentary Luggage Storage

Booking with Machu Picchu Team means you can leave your luggage safely at our main office at no extra charge. Since the tour starts and finishes there, retrieving your belongings afterward is quick and hassle-free.

Safety and Support

Your safety and comfort come first. Guides carry a first-aid kit and are ready to help with minor health concerns or unexpected situations during the day. Since this is primarily a cultural and archaeological experience rather than a demanding trek, the pace stays relaxed — though your guide will still offer clear guidance and support at any sites with stairs, uneven terrain, or higher elevations.

Entrance Fees for Moray

Accessing Moray, one of the featured archaeological sites on this Moray and Maras Salt Mines Tour, requires the Cusco Tourist Ticket, locally known as the Boleto Turístico del Cusco (BTC). This ticket can be picked up either in Cusco city (at the Municipality) or right at Moray’s entrance. Keep in mind that payment must be made in cash, Peruvian soles only — US dollars, other foreign currencies, cards, and digital payments won’t be accepted, so having the exact amount on hand is recommended.

  • 🎟️ General Tourist Ticket — 130 Soles

Valid for 10 days, this ticket unlocks access to 16 attractions throughout Cusco and the Sacred Valley, including Moray, Chinchero, Ollantaytambo, Pisac, Sacsayhuamán, Tambomachay, Tipón, Pikillacta, and several Cusco museums. It’s the ideal choice for travelers planning to explore multiple archaeological sites during their trip.

  • 🎟️ Partial Tourist Ticket — 70 Soles

Valid for 2 days, this option covers the four main Sacred Valley sites: Chinchero, Moray, Ollantaytambo, and Pisac. It’s a smart pick if you’d like the flexibility to visit those additional locations during your stay, even though this particular tour only includes Moray.

Maras Salt Mines Entrance Fee — 20 Soles

Entry to the Maras Salt Mines isn’t covered by either version of the Tourist Ticket and must be paid separately at the gate, in cash and Peruvian soles. As with other entrance fees, bringing the exact amount will help make the entry process fast and straightforward.

Practical Recommendations for Your Moray and Maras Salt Mines Tour

To help you make the most of your Moray and Maras Salt Mines Tour, here are some useful tips to keep in mind before and during your visit:

Eat Breakfast Before Departure

Since the tour starts at 8:30 AM and meals aren’t included, have a proper breakfast beforehand to make sure you have enough energy for the day ahead.

Arrive at the Meeting Point With Time to Spare

Since there’s no hotel pick-up, plan to reach the Machu Picchu Team office a few minutes early — either on foot if you’re staying nearby, or by taxi — to ensure a smooth, on-time departure.

Get Your Tourist Ticket Sorted in Advance if Possible

Since Moray requires a valid Cusco Tourist Ticket, consider purchasing it in the city beforehand to save time, or plan to buy the Partial Tourist Ticket right at the entrance to Moray.

Bring Enough Cash in Soles

Beyond the tourist ticket, you’ll need cash for the Maras Salt Mines entrance fee (20 soles), plus any snacks, souvenirs, or extra expenses. Cards typically aren’t accepted at these entrances.

Pack Water and a Light Snack

Since there are no scheduled meal stops during the tour, bringing your own water and a light snack will help keep your energy up between sites.

Dress in Layers

Mornings in the Sacred Valley can be cool, while temperatures often rise as the day progresses. Light, adjustable layers will keep you comfortable throughout the tour.

Wear Comfortable Walking Shoes

Some paths at Moray and the Salt Mines can be uneven or dusty, so sturdy shoes with good grip will make exploring both sites much more enjoyable.

Protect Yourself from the Sun

The Andean sun is intense even on overcast days. Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are essential during the outdoor portions of the visit.

Take Advantage of the Extra Time at Each Site

Since this tour focuses on just two attractions, you’ll have around 1 to 1.5 hours at each — use this time to ask your guide questions, explore independently, and take plenty of photos without feeling rushed.

Bring a Fully Charged Camera or Phone

Both Moray’s circular terraces and the golden-hued Salt Mines offer incredible photo opportunities, so having a charged device or portable charger is a good idea.

Plan Lunch in Cusco Afterward

Since the tour returns around 3:00 PM, this is a great opportunity to enjoy a late lunch back in the city once you’re done.

Carry Your ID and Booking Confirmation

Bring your passport or valid identification, along with your booking confirmation, in case it’s needed at the meeting point or any of the sites.

Following these simple recommendations will help ensure your Moray and Maras Salt Mines Tour is smooth, comfortable, and truly memorable.

Do I need the Cusco Tourist Ticket to enter Moray and the Maras Salt Mines?

Yes. Access to Moray requires a valid Cusco Tourist Ticket — there’s no separate, standalone ticket for Moray alone. If you already hold the General Tourist Ticket (valid for 10 days), you can use it, provided it’s still active and you haven’t yet redeemed the Moray entry. If you don’t have a ticket yet, the Partial Tourist Ticket (70 soles) can be purchased directly at Moray’s entrance and covers access to Moray along with several other archaeological sites. Keep in mind that the Maras Salt Mines entrance fee is separate from the Tourist Ticket and must be paid on-site, currently priced at 20 soles per person.

What makes the Moray and Maras Salt Mines Tour unique?

This tour brings together two remarkably distinct attractions. Moray stands out as one of the region’s most fascinating Inca sites, with circular terraces believed to have functioned as an agricultural testing ground where the Incas studied crop behavior across different microclimates — there’s truly no other Inca structure quite like it. The Maras Salt Mines are equally captivating, featuring thousands of salt pools covering the mountainside that local families still work today. During your visit, you’ll see firsthand how salt is harvested using traditional techniques dating back to pre-Inca and Inca times.

Why aren’t breakfast and lunch included?

Since the tour departs around 8:30 AM — after typical breakfast hours — and returns to Cusco by about 3:00 PM, there’s a natural opportunity to have lunch in the city afterward. The route also doesn’t pass suitable restaurant stops that align with the tour’s schedule. For these reasons, meals aren’t factored into the tour price. We recommend eating breakfast before departure and packing water along with a light snack for the day.

How much time do we spend at each site?

Since this tour focuses on just two main attractions, you’ll get more time to enjoy each one fully. Visits to Moray and the Maras Salt Mines generally run between one and one and a half hours per stop — plenty of time for guided explanations, independent exploration, photos, and simply taking in the scenery without feeling rushed.

Why isn’t hotel pick-up included?

Hotel pick-up isn’t part of this tour because morning traffic in central Cusco tends to be heavy, and picking up passengers from multiple hotels could delay departure and disrupt the planned schedule. Instead, all travelers gather directly at the Machu Picchu Team office at 8:30 AM. Our centrally located office is within easy walking distance of most hotels in the historic center, or you can take a short taxi ride to the meeting point. Starting from a single location keeps the tour on schedule and makes for a smoother, more efficient departure.

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.
