Trip itinerary

Upon arrival at the Puerto Maldonado airport or bus terminal, your Tambopata Amazon Tour 3 Days begins as our team welcomes you and transfers you to the Hacienda Tambopata office for registration and final preparations. If you’re already staying in Puerto Maldonado, we can arrange pick-up directly from your hotel instead.

Travelers carrying larger suitcases can leave their main luggage safely at the office, repacking only the essentials needed for the three-day jungle adventure.

Once registration is complete, the journey continues by road for approximately two hours toward the Tambopata River. Upon reaching the riverbank, you’ll board a motorized boat for the continuation of your trip to Hacienda Tambopata Lodge.

Once at the lodge, you’ll receive a welcome briefing, settle into your room, and enjoy lunch surrounded by the vibrant sounds and lush vegetation of the Amazon rainforest.

Introductory Rainforest Walk
In the afternoon, your guide leads an introductory walk through the tropical forest — your first opportunity to discover the plants, insects, and wildlife that make up the Tambopata ecosystem. Depending on natural conditions, you may spot amphibians, reptiles, mammals, butterflies, tropical insects, birds, and other species inhabiting the surrounding forest.

After the walk, you’ll return to the lodge for dinner and a peaceful first night immersed in the Amazon.

Day 1 Summary

  • Starting point: Puerto Maldonado airport or bus terminal
  • Route: Puerto Maldonado → Tambopata River → Hacienda Tambopata Lodge
  • Road transportation: Approximately 2 hours
  • Boat transportation: River transfer to the lodge
  • Main activity: Guided introductory rainforest walk
  • Meals included: Lunch and dinner
  • Accommodation: Hacienda Tambopata Lodge

Day two of your Tambopata Amazon Tour 3 Days begins early, with wake-up around 4:30 AM, followed by a motorized boat journey toward the renowned Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick. This river trip takes approximately 1.5 hours, offering possible sightings of wildlife along the riverbanks, including capybaras, tapirs, tropical birds, and other Amazonian species. While jaguar sightings do occur, they remain rare and can’t be guaranteed. A camping-style breakfast is served during the excursion.

Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick
Upon arrival, you’ll settle into the designated observation area and wait for the activity to unfold. Hundreds of parrots and macaws may gather along the clay wall to feed on mineral-rich soil, believed to play an important role in their natural diet by helping neutralize toxins found in certain fruits and seeds they consume. Depending on weather and natural wildlife behavior, you might spot various parrot species and vividly colored macaws, including red-and-green and blue-and-yellow varieties. This ranks among the most spectacular birdwatching experiences in the Tambopata rainforest and offers exceptional opportunities for wildlife photography. After the observation period wraps up, you’ll return to Hacienda Tambopata Lodge.

Transfer to the Sandoval Lake Area
Following lunch, the journey continues back toward Puerto Maldonado before heading onward to the lodge near Sandoval Lake. This transfer combines river and road transportation depending on current operational conditions. Upon arrival at Monte Amazónico Lodge, you’ll check into your room and have time to rest.

Night Caiman Search
After sunset, you’ll travel along the Madre de Dios River in search of white caimans, often found resting near riverbanks and sandbars. Your guide uses a flashlight to spot the reflective glow of their eyes in the darkness, and you may also encounter capybaras, nocturnal birds, bats, and other creatures active after dark. Once the excursion concludes, you’ll return to the lodge for dinner and your overnight stay.

Day 2 Summary

  • Departure time: Approximately 4:30 AM
  • Main destination: Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick
  • Boat journey: Approximately 1.5 hours each way
  • Main activities: Macaw observation and nighttime caiman search
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Accommodation: Monte Amazónico Lodge near Sandoval Lake

After breakfast, the final day of your Tambopata Amazon Tour 3 Days begins with an excursion to Sandoval Lake, one of the region’s most celebrated wildlife destinations. You’ll walk approximately 3 kilometers through the tropical rainforest to reach the lake, with your guide explaining the surrounding vegetation and helping identify birds, insects, monkeys, and other wildlife along the trail.

Paddle-Canoe Exploration of Sandoval Lake
Upon reaching the lake, you’ll board a paddle canoe and glide quietly across the water. This slow, silent approach creates ideal conditions for observing wildlife without disturbing their natural habitat. Depending on activity that day, you might spot hoatzins, cormorants, jacanas, herons, vultures, squirrel monkeys, capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, tamarins, and sloths. Sandoval Lake also serves as home to giant river otters, an endangered Amazonian species that can grow nearly two meters long. Black caimans and other aquatic creatures may also make an appearance, though as with all wildlife encounters, sightings can never be guaranteed.

After exploring the lake, you’ll walk back to the lodge to enjoy a traditional Amazonian lunch.

Return to Puerto Maldonado
Following lunch, the journey heads back to Puerto Maldonado, with transfer to the airport or bus terminal included according to your confirmed departure schedule.

Day 3 Summary

  • Main activity: Paddle-canoe wildlife exploration

A clear photo of both sides of the card must be sent via email or WhatsApp during booking, with the original card carried and presented upon request. If the student ID is expired, incomplete, invalid, or doesn’t meet requirements, the standard adult rate will apply instead.

Last-minute reservations may only be accepted once our operations team confirms all necessary services remain available.

Private Departures

Changes, Cancellations & Refunds

Date Changes and Rescheduling

Requests to change your departure date should be submitted as early as possible via email or WhatsApp. Rescheduling depends on availability of jungle lodges, professional guides, motorized boats, ground transportation, local staff, entrance arrangements, and confirmed departures. Services already reserved or paid to local suppliers may be non-refundable, and any additional costs resulting from a date change — new accommodation, boat, transportation, entrance, or staffing expenses — must be covered by the traveler. To request a change, contact us at info@machupicchuteam.com or via WhatsApp at +51 974 217 700.

Cancellation Policy

A non-refundable deposit of $180 USD per person is required to confirm your reservation.

  • More than 48 hours before departure: The non-refundable deposit and the cost of any services already reserved or paid to suppliers will be deducted, with any remaining eligible balance refunded.
  • Within 48 hours of departure: Non-refundable.

Travelers who don’t arrive at the confirmed airport, bus terminal, hotel, or meeting point at the scheduled time will be considered no-shows, with no refund, credit, or rescheduling provided. Card-processing fees, bank charges, exchange-rate differences, currency-conversion costs, and payments already made to lodges, guides, drivers, boat operators, transportation providers, reserve administrators, or other suppliers remain non-refundable.

Changes or Cancellation by Machu Picchu Team

The itinerary may be modified, postponed, or cancelled when weather or operational conditions make the original program unsafe or impossible to run. Possible causes include heavy rainfall, flooding, unsafe river levels, damaged trails, landslides, road closures, strikes, government restrictions, forest fires, or other circumstances beyond our reasonable control. When operationally feasible, Machu Picchu Team may offer a new departure date, a modified itinerary, a comparable alternative activity, or a refund for services not provided and recoverable from relevant suppliers. Wildlife sightings — including macaws, giant river otters, caimans, monkeys, capybaras, tapirs, or jaguars — can’t be guaranteed throughout your Tambopata Amazon Tour 3 Days, since these animals live freely in their natural habitat. Changes in wildlife activity don’t constitute grounds for a refund, and refunds can’t be guaranteed for services already reserved, paid, used, or declared non-refundable by third-party providers.

FAQs: Tambopata Amazon Tour 3 Days

1. Where does the tour start, and how do I get to Puerto Maldonado?

Your Tambopata Amazon Tour 3 Days begins in Puerto Maldonado, located in southeastern Peru. Most travelers reach the city via a short flight from Cusco or by taking an overnight bus. Upon arrival, our team meets you at the airport or bus terminal and coordinates all transfers included in your itinerary.

2. What activities are included throughout these three days?

Your itinerary includes an early-morning visit to the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, guided rainforest walks, motorized boat journeys, a nighttime caiman search, and a paddle-canoe excursion on Sandoval Lake. The exact sequence of activities may shift depending on weather, river conditions, and other operational factors.

3. What wildlife might I encounter during this tour?

Depending on the season and natural wildlife activity, sightings may include macaws, parrots, monkeys, capybaras, caimans, tropical birds, butterflies, giant river otters, and other Amazonian species. Since these animals live freely in their natural habitat, sightings can’t be guaranteed.

4. How physically demanding is this experience?

This tour requires a moderate level of physical activity and suits most travelers in reasonably good health. The main hiking portion covers approximately 3 kilometers of jungle trail leading to Sandoval Lake, which can be muddy, wet, or slippery during the rainy season. No previous trekking experience is necessary.

5. What should I pack for this Tambopata adventure?

Bring your original passport, lightweight long-sleeved clothing, long pants, comfortable closed-toe walking shoes, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a rain poncho, a reusable water bottle, a headlamp, personal medication, a camera, and cash in Peruvian soles for personal expenses. Keep in mind that internet and phone service may be limited or completely unavailable at the jungle lodges.

Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know About the Tambopata Amazon Tour 3 Days

Whether you’re extending your Peru trip beyond Cusco or planning a dedicated Amazon adventure, this guide covers everything worth knowing before booking your Tambopata Amazon Tour 3 Days.

Why Choose the 3-Day Version Over Shorter Options

While a 2-day tour offers a solid introduction to the Amazon, the extra day here makes a genuine difference. You gain a full rest and exploration day at Hacienda Tambopata before heading to the clay lick, plus more time at Sandoval Lake without feeling rushed. For travelers genuinely interested in wildlife rather than just checking a box, this additional time significantly improves your odds of meaningful sightings.

Understanding the Two-Lodge Structure

Unlike single-lodge itineraries, this tour splits your stay between two distinct ecosystems — Hacienda Tambopata along the river, and Monte Amazónico near Sandoval Lake. This isn’t just logistical convenience; each location offers access to different wildlife-viewing opportunities, meaning you’re essentially experiencing two different slices of the Amazon rather than exploring the same area for three days straight.

The Clay Lick: Why Timing Is Everything

Reaching Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick requires a genuinely early start — waking around 4:30 AM isn’t negotiable if you want to witness this phenomenon properly. Macaws and parrots gather at clay walls specifically during morning hours, so this isn’t a schedule built around tourist convenience; it’s built around actual animal behavior patterns that can’t be rescheduled to suit a more comfortable wake-up time.

Setting Realistic Wildlife Expectations

This bears repeating throughout any Amazon guide: sightings of jaguars, giant river otters, and other headline species depend entirely on natural conditions beyond anyone’s control. What sets Tambopata apart, however, is the sheer volume and diversity of species you’re likely to encounter regardless of whether you spot the most elusive animals — the clay lick alone typically delivers genuinely spectacular macaw activity even on days when larger mammals stay hidden.

The Night Caiman Search Deserves Attention

Many travelers focus entirely on daytime activities and overlook how different — and rewarding — nighttime Amazon exploration can be. Searching for white caimans along the Madre de Dios River after dark reveals an entirely different side of the ecosystem, with nocturnal species like bats and night birds becoming active in ways you simply won’t witness during daylight excursions.

Sandoval Lake’s Unique Ecosystem

Unlike the river-based activities earlier in your trip, Sandoval Lake represents a blackwater ecosystem with its own distinct character — the slow, silent canoe approach here isn’t just about comfort, it’s specifically designed to avoid disturbing wildlife in ways that motorized boats would. This is where giant river otter sightings become most likely, given the lake’s reputation as prime otter habitat.

Physical Demands: More Approachable Than You Might Think

Despite covering three days of jungle activities, this tour remains accessible to most reasonably fit travelers. The main physical challenge is the approximately 3-kilometer walk to Sandoval Lake, which can turn muddy during wet season but doesn’t require prior trekking experience or exceptional fitness levels.

Packing for Genuine Amazon Conditions

Humidity here differs significantly from Cusco’s dry mountain air, meaning quick-dry fabrics matter more than warmth. Since ATMs and card payments become unreliable once you leave Puerto Maldonado, bringing sufficient cash in small denominations isn’t just convenient — it’s essential for any purchases at the lodges themselves.

Disconnecting From Connectivity

Internet and phone service become genuinely unreliable or nonexistent at jungle lodges, which travelers should view as a feature rather than a limitation. This forced disconnection often becomes one of the more memorable aspects of the trip, allowing full immersion in the rainforest experience without digital distractions pulling attention away from actual wildlife encounters.

Who Benefits Most from This Extended Itinerary

This three-day format particularly suits serious wildlife photographers wanting more shooting opportunities, nature enthusiasts who find two days insufficient for genuine immersion, and travelers who’ve specifically prioritized the Amazon as a major component of their Peru trip rather than a brief add-on.

A Final Practical Note

Since flights connecting Cusco and Puerto Maldonado aren’t included in this package, booking your transportation with enough buffer time protects against the genuine risk of delays affecting your jungle itinerary. The Tambopata Amazon Tour 3 Days rewards travelers who treat their Amazon days as a dedicated adventure requiring its own careful planning, rather than a rushed add-on squeezed into an already packed Peru itinerary.

We did the 4 day and 3 night Salkantay Trek on the 27th of July, and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially with Machu Picchu Teams.Everything exceeded our expectations from the accommodation and food to the organisation and most importantly, the amazing staff. Our guide Max made the experience so special. He taught us so much about the Quechua way of life and Inca traditions at every stop along the trek, which gave us such a good appreciation for the places we were visiting. He was also so much fun to be around, always making us laugh and keeping everyone's spirits high, even during the toughest parts of the hike. His positivity, encouragement and knowledge really made the experience unforgettable.A huge thank you as well to our chefs, especially Braulio, the head chef. We genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the food considering where we were. Every meal was so fresh and delicious and they had lots of vegetarian options too. We were given three generous meals a day which also included starters at lunch and dinner, plus snacks along the way. It was far beyond anything we expected on a trek. What really sets this company apart is the people. Max wasn't just a guide he genuinely cared about everyone in the group and always made sure we were doing okay. He knew exactly when to encourage us on the harder climbs, when to make us laugh, and when to stop to tell us another story about the history and culture of the area. He gave us a group name and gathered us every morning to do a chant together to get us ready for the day. You can tell he loves what he does and his passion made the whole trek so much more meaningful. The entire team was so kind and welcoming, and they made us feel looked after from start to finish. If you're thinking of doing the Salkantay Trek, I couldn't recommend Machu Picchu Teams more. It was an unforgettable experience, and we're so grateful to everyone who made it so special.

This tour is full of adventures and blessings. The exciting bicycle descent from the Andes took us through changing landscapes to the tropical rainforest. The hike through the jungle, led by an expert guide, allowed us to learn about the local flora and fauna. The RAFTING and ZIPLINING activities added excitement to the trip and were perfectly organized. The natural hot springs were an ideal place to relax after days full of activities. The visit to Machu Picchu was the highlight, with its impressive architecture and view. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a combination of adventure, nature, and culture.

I had an amazing time doing the Salkantay trek with Machu pichu teams! Especially Nacho who was an incredible guide for our group, always making sure we were all having a good time, having fun and looking after us from the start to the end. Big thanks to the whole team :)
