STUDENT PRICE

HOW TO ACCESS THE STUDENT PRICE FOR A TOUR TO MACHU PICCHU?

The Peruvian government offers discounts for students on entrance tickets to Machu Picchu. Consequently, in our tours to Machu Picchu, we provide a reduced rate for students. To qualify for this special rate, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Student Age: You must be under 25 years old at the time of your visit to Machu Picchu. This age limit is aimed at benefiting undergraduate students.
  • Material and Format of the Student Card: The card must be a physical plastic document, similar to a credit card, with all the required information printed on it. Cards made of other materials or with information added via stickers or not printed are not accepted.
  • Required Information on the Card: The card must include the following printed information: details of the university, personal information of the student, the student’s photograph, and a validity date not exceeding one year from the date of your visit. For example, if you plan to visit in 2024, the card should not expire before 2025 and must be valid during the visit.
  • Note on the ISIC Card: Although the International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is recognized in many countries, it is not accepted by the Peruvian government for student discounts at Machu Picchu. Just as a passport cannot be replaced by any other type of identification in international procedures, the student card cannot be substituted by an ISIC or any other document for discounts in Peru.

The policy of the Peruvian government is stringent regarding the accreditation of students. It is imperative to present a card that fulfills these criteria to be eligible for student-priced tickets because, upon entering Machu Picchu, you will be required to show the physical student card. If you do not meet these requirements upon arrival at Machu Picchu, there is a significant risk of being denied entry and having to pay the full ticket price, depending on availability. Therefore, ensuring that your student card adheres to Peruvian regulations is crucial before booking your tour to as student Machu Picchu.

Important information for the Trip

08 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING TO MACHU PICCHU

We understand you have many questions. Traveling to Machu Picchu is straightforward, but it’s important to consider certain key points to ensure your experience at Machu Picchu is exceptional.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE FOUR CIRCUITS OF MACHU PICCHU?

Machu Picchu now features four new circuits designed to optimize your experience and reduce overcrowding at certain points within the archaeological site. We invite you to watch the following video where we delve deeper into the details of these circuits.

    • Circuit 1 allows you to view the Guardian’s House, close to the spot where you can take the classic photo of Machu Picchu. From here, you can observe other parts of the citadel, including the Sun Temple viewpoint, the Granitic Chaos, and Pisonay Plaza.
    • Circuit 2 is the most comprehensive and recommended as it includes the path of Circuit 1. It allows you to capture that iconic photo that will immortalize your journey and offers the chance to explore many more archaeological sites, such as the Temples Plaza, the Intiwatana, and the Sacred Rock.
    • Circuit 3 takes the lower path through Machu Picchu and provides a different perspective of the Inca citadel. It also allows you to view archaeological areas such as the Qolqas, the agricultural zone, and the Inca house complex.
    • Circuit 4 is more extensive than Circuit 3, covering the same areas plus additional symbolic sites like the ceremonial fountains, the Water Mirrors complex, and the Temple of the Condor.

IS IT BETTER TO ENTER MACHU PICCHU IN THE AFTERNOON OR IN THE MORNING?

There are nine entry times to Machu Picchu, which you can choose depending on when you arrive in Aguas Calientes. Here are the details of the timings:

    • Morning Entry Times (6, 7, 8, and 9 AM) to the Machu Picchu citadel: For these times, it’s necessary to leave Cusco very early, keeping in mind that the vehicle journey to the Ollantaytambo train station takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. From there, you’ll take a train to the town of Aguas Calientes, which is a 1 hour and 50-minute ride. If you’re not an early riser, consider traveling the day before and staying overnight in Aguas Calientes to avoid waking up very early.
    • During these times, the site isn’t as crowded, making the visit more peaceful and enjoyable, offering a different perspective compared to other times. You’ll also have the chance to appreciate the Intiwatana during these hours.
    • Midday Entry Times (10, 11 AM, 12, and 1 PM) are likely to be more crowded. If you’re planning to take the classic photo with fewer people around, it might be more challenging. The sun will be at its highest, shining directly onto the sanctuary with great intensity. However, this time also has its charm as the sky will be clear, providing better views of Machu Picchu.
    • Afternoon Entry Times (1 and 2 PM) are considered by some to be the best times to visit Machu Picchu due to the sunset between the mountains casting its final rays over the citadel. It offers a perfect panorama for photography, and the weather is cooler. You can travel the same day without needing to stay in Aguas Calientes the night before, but remember that you will also arrive back in Cusco a bit late, between 10 and 11 PM.

CAN I BRING LUGGAGE INTO MACHU PICCHU?

Luggage is restricted when visiting Machu Picchu. You are allowed to enter with a backpack of up to 25 liters, which is the maximum size permitted. This restriction is in place because large items are unnecessary, and it helps protect the site and ensures the comfort of visitors. With smaller backpacks, navigating the site is more practical and less cumbersome.

WHAT CAN I BRING TO MACHU PICCHU?

  1. The identification document used to register your entry to Machu Picchu.
  2. Sunscreen.
  3. Windbreaker jacket.
  4. Rain poncho (depending on the season).
  5. Trekking shoes.
  6. Insect repellent.
  7. Light clothing.
  8. Water.
  9. Sunglasses.
  10. Hat.

WHAT ARE THE PROHIBITED ITEMS AND RESTRICTIONS AT MACHU PICCHU?

  • Carrying backpacks, bags, or purses larger than 25 liters.
  • Bringing in food.
  • Bringing in any type of alcoholic beverage or entering while intoxicated.
  • Carrying walking sticks, umbrellas, parasols, portable seats, tripods, camera or cellphone stabilizers, or any other extension or stabilization element for filming and/or photography, unless you have a special permit.
  • Using drones within Machu Picchu.
  • Entering with animals, except for guide dogs.
  • Feeding any domestic or wild animals.
  • Entering with any type of aerosols.
  • Engaging in any form of graffiti.

For a detailed understanding of the rules and to ensure a respectful and safe visit, please refer to the official website at www.machupicchu.gob.pe.

WHAT IS THE BEST SEASON TO VISIT MACHU PICCHU?

Machu Picchu welcomes visitors year-round, but many consider the months of May through October as the ideal time to visit. During these months, the mornings are typically sunny, and the afternoons are fresh. This period is favored for its clearer skies and more radiant sunlight.

  • November and December mark the onset of the rainy season. The landscapes gradually turn lush green, and the evenings can feel chilly. While rain may surprise you on some days, tours continue as usual. Machu Picchu presents a different vista during this time, with the mist enveloping the sanctuary, adding a touch of mystery as it dissipates into the air. Even if it’s cloudy and rainy while you’re exploring Machu Picchu, you can still enjoy your tour with a poncho or waterproof jacket. Many visitors prefer the rainy ambiance over a sunny day for a unique perspective of this modern world wonder. If you prefer clearer weather, it’s more likely to be sunny from 11 am onwards.
  • January, February, and March are the wettest months. The tourism sector considers this low season, which means fewer crowds if you’re planning to travel during these months. Additionally, the landscapes are lush green, and the weather is cooler compared to other seasons. If you decide to travel in this season, it’s advisable to purchase tickets for entry times from 11 am onwards to increase your chances of experiencing clear views. Rainfall typically occurs 3 to 4 days a week during these months, varying from light all-day drizzles to short periods of heavy downpour. Machu Picchu is often cloudy in the early mornings during these months.

Remember that the weather in the Andes is unpredictable. However, the information provided aims to give a close approximation of the climate in each season. We look forward to your visit. CuscoPeru.com will have everything organized for you. We have many satisfied passengers who have enjoyed their experiences and our services throughout the year.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD I BOOK MY TICKET TO MACHU PICCHU?

While it’s possible to book your Machu Picchu ticket just a day before your visit, it’s advisable to make your reservation at least one or two months in advance. Entry is limited, and early booking is recommended. If you wish to visit Huayna Picchu (WAYNAPICCHU), consider booking your ticket about 3 months prior to your visit.

These recommendations are crucial to ensure an optimal experience at Machu Picchu, especially since popular entries like the Machu Picchu 1-2 Circuit and Huayna Picchu tend to sell out quickly.

For travelers unable to book well in advance, an alternative is to purchase tickets for other circuits like 4 or 3. While these won’t provide the classic Machu Picchu photo opportunity, you’ll still experience the temples and view Machu Picchu from a lower perspective.

Be aware that there are certain times of the year when last-minute tickets are especially hard to come by due to high demand. To avoid the hassle and ensure your entry, it’s best to plan ahead and contact a reliable agency well in advance. For assistance with booking your visit to Machu Picchu, feel free to reach out to CuscoPeru.com, who will be more than happy to help.

WHAT PRECAUTIONS SHOULD I TAKE TO PREVENT ALTITUDE SICKNESS?

  • The most recommended way to prevent altitude sickness is through gradual acclimatization, which means ascending moderately to allow your body to adapt to the decreasing oxygen levels as you gain altitude. It’s advisable to spend at least one day in Cusco engaging in minimal physical exertion to adjust to the altitude.
  • Monitoring your diet is also important. Eating light, easily digestible foods will aid in the acclimatization process.
  • Staying hydrated is crucial; aim to drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water while in Cusco. Ensure you get a minimum of 8 hours of sleep each night before your tours and keep your body well-rested with minimal physical exertion. As a natural remedy, consider drinking herbal tea or infusions that aid digestion during your stay. These simple steps can significantly enhance your ability to comfortably adjust to higher altitudes.

Bucket list experience This was an experience of a lifetime! I wouldn’t have done it with any other company. They really look after you and ensure you have the best experience as possible. We were served delicious freshly made traditional Peruvian food everyday and served an array of different hot drinks. Along the way we were welcomed by the amazing views of the Peruvian Andes and Amazon rainforest. Juel was an incredible tour guide, very passionate about his Inca ancestors and about the nature around us.

Great, rewarding experience This tour was a great experience, not only seeing Machu Picchu itself but also beautiful lakes, viewpoints and Inca sites. The food was absolutely incredible and there was more than enough for each of us. Joel was a great guide, very passionate and knowledgable about the Incan empire. I would definitely recommend hiring the walking poles and sleeping bag. The whole experience was very rewarding and Joel made sure the morale of the group was high. The only downside was the return bus company from Hidroelectrica to Cusco. We booked via bus and had to leave Machu Picchu early to catch this bus. The organisers made us wait for over an hour for our bus, which meant we could have had more time at the site.

4-Days Salkantay Trek with superb guide Aurelio I did the 4-days Salkantay Trek with Machu Picchu Reservations together with a friend. Our guide Aurelio was really good and you felt that he completely identifies with the Anden culture! He always made sure that everybody in the group was able to follow. Also he gave us a lot of interesting insights into the Anden culture and nature. In general the organisation of the tour was good (briefing one day ahead of the tour, information flyer etc.). It could have been better, if we would have been better prepared for the rainy weather. Drying wet clothes was challenging in the accommodations which we had.

5 day trek review with Juan Oros (guide) The salkantay trek under the expert guidance of Juan Oros was a life highlight of mine. We completed the hike across 5 days and were blessed with plenty of breaks in the weather given it was wet season. If you're completing the hike in March, do NOT forget a poncho, plastic bags/dry bags, and extra pairs of socks/clothes for when your stuff gets wet (it's very hard to dry stuff after it's wet). Juan was optimistic, knowledgeable, understanding and went out of his way constantly to ensure our experience was a good one. Additionally, he was transparent and gave us options when the conditions affected the normal route. Machu Picchu reservations are accommodating for dietary requirements and provide comfortable accommodation along the hike. All-in-all, some incredible views, plenty of laughing, great and varied hiking, good food, and an incredible guide. Thank you Juan and Machu Picchu Reservations for an unforgettable experience!

Marco’s Muchachos - A Tale of Adventure, Laughter, and Friendship Words cannot even begin to describe the experience Marco provided for myself, my mate from work, and our Aussie, British, and English friends. Aside from the natural beauty of Humantay Lake, rich culture of the Incas, majesty of Salkantay Peak, and, of course, the grandiose beauty of Machu Picchu itself, the experience was truly made unforgettable because of Marco’s guiding service. Incredibly knowledgeable, considerate, and fun, Marco guided us through the 4 day, 3 night trek stopping to elaborate on the fascinating history of the trail and of the Incan people culminating in a well-earned view of the historic ruins themselves. As an avid traveller and hiker, I would strongly recommend THIS particular company with specifically Marco as the leading guide.

ChoquequirWOW I can't recommend this tour enough. Our tour guide Renzo was organised, professional and incredibly intelligent. I felt like I was in safe hands and benefitted so much from his vast local knowledge and prefect English. The food was a great opportunity to try local Peruvian cuisine and as a vegan I was very grateful for the effort our hosts, Renzo and horseman Jon went to to make sure I had delicious meals. The hike was challenging but the constant stunning views made it worthwhile and I felt so accomplished afterwards. Plus Renzon provided us with lots of encouragement and support. Choquequirao itself was like nothing I have ever seen before. We only saw 13 people not in our group there (including the ricket collector). The site is impressive and feels special, especially with everything Renzo told us about it. Having a whole day to explore the site was brilliant as we could take our time ot enjoy and appreciate it rather than rushing off, like others we saw did. It meant we had a lovely lunch there, kindly delivered by Jon, and had the site to ourselves for the afternoon. If you are in Peru you must visit Choquequirao and I strongly recommend ypu use Machu Pichu adventures for the perfectly curated experience.

Incredible Trip! Incredible trip!! Our guide, Bruno, was phenomenal and a crucial part of why our experience was so great. He let us set our own pace and had meeting points each 1-1.5hrs of hiking. He taught us so much about local culture and history and made us appreciate the scenery we were walking through even more. The views are truly stunning. Each camp was comfortable and the meals were great! Tons of food and always felt fueled up for long days. I would recommend Machu Picchu Reservations again! We had nightly briefings about each day of the trek and they ensured we had everything we needed for a safe and enjoyable trek. I have been to Machu Picchu before but going via Salkantay Trek was a far better experience and I would recommend this trek over and over--truly an unforgettable experience!

4 day Salkantay trek with Angel Me and my friend Conor did the 4-day Salkantay trek with our guide Angel. Angel was a fun and attentive guide who taught us a lot about the surrounding area and showed us some breath taking scenery. He always gave us a lot of information about the day ahead, made sure we were comfortable and helped make the trek a really memorable experience. Reaching the 4600m peak of Salkantay was incredible and finally getting to see Machu Pichu were definitely highlights of the journey. Would recommend.
