Highlights
- Exploring a Stunning, Little-Known Turquoise Lake: What I love most is that this place isn’t on the main tourist trail. The landscape is said to be absolutely impressive, and getting to experience it without the crowds is a massive draw for me.
- A Glimpse into Authentic Andean Life: The chance to pass through towns like Ocongate (elevation: 3,533 m / 11,591 ft), Tinki (elevation: 3,800 m / 12,467 ft), and Pacchanta (elevation: 4,310 m / 14,140 ft) is a huge part of the appeal. These are places where you can still see the rich cultural heritage of the Andes, where inhabitants in traditional dress preserve the myths and traditions inherited from their ancestors.

TRIP ITINERARY
Singrenacocha Lake Day Tour
the day starting with a pre-dawn 4:30 AM pick-up from my hotel in Cusco (elevation: 3,399 m / 11,152 ft). We’d be driven in a van for about three hours to the town of Yanacancha (approx. elevation: 4,200 m / 13,780 ft). There, we’d enjoy a delicious breakfast before embarking on a short, 30-minute hike to what I’ve heard lovingly called “the older sister of Humantay Lake.”
Upon arrival, I expect to be completely surprised by the immense body of turquoise water, surrounded by imposing, rugged, snow-capped mountains. I find it fascinating that the lake’s color is so peculiar, changing three times a year between turquoise, lead blue, and green. The turquoise is its most characteristic shade, a result of pulverized minerals brought down from the snowy mountains that remain suspended in the water. The effect is said to be most brilliant on sunny days.
After my guide takes plenty of memorable photos and we hike along the lagoon’s edge, we’d return to our van. A short 15-minute drive would take us to the town of Pampacancha (approx. elevation: 4,250 m / 13,944 ft), where we’d get to enjoy some relaxing hot springs—the perfect reward after the fabulous tour. This amazing hike also offers the chance to see herds of llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas in their natural habitat, which is an experience I’m desperate to have.
